Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Amber Benson says the show’s set was toxic, and agrees with testimony posted hours earlier by Charisma Carpenter.

Amber Benson, actress of Tara Maclay from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, supports former co-star Charisma Carpenter for talking about the toxic work environment that director Joss Whedon created on set. Whedon has been at the forefront of many successful franchises in Hollywood, whether as a producer, writer, director, or all three. Some of the projects for which Whedon is well known include Buffy, its spin-off Angel, Firefly, and the first two Avengers films. After Fischer began speaking last summer, Whedon said he would be stepping away from his HBO series. The Nevers, and last month he was completely replaced as showrunner. As for Fisher, Warner Bros. has denied his accusation and has been removed from his role as Cyborg, sparking further scandal and leading to the #IStandWithRayFisher trend on Twitter. On Wednesday morning, Carpenter used the hashtag in a tweet that includes his detailed recollection of Whedon’s unprofessional behavior, this time on the set of Buffy the vampire slayer.

Benson, who played a recurring character in Buffy For a third of the show’s duration, he agrees with Carpenter’s testimony. She says this caused a lot of damage that many are still working today. Although Benson’s tweet doesn’t name Whedon specifically, she says the toxicity on set “starts at the top. “You can see Benson’s tweet below:

Understandably, these memories of the two women have upset fans that this kind of sexist behavior could occur on the set of a show with deliberately feminist and progressive themes. Not only Buffy It does not have male killers, but it also offered a powerful representation of women, which was unfortunately in short supply in the late 90s / early 2000s when the show aired. The show is also noted for its queer representation. Benson herself played Tara, Willow Rosenberg’s (Alyson Hannigan) girlfriend, in a period of time when there was still minimal LGBTQ representation in Hollywood.

Due to his high ranking position on the show, Whedon has also been heralded as a pioneer, and Whedon has declared himself a feminist. That said, in 2017, Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole called him a “hypocrite preaching feminist ideals”. While that didn’t weaken his career at the time, the staggering number of accusations is likely to change his reputation this time.

Since Whedon has worked in several famous movies and movies, in addition to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there are many people who have worked with him and who may introduce themselves in the near future. Many famous actors and actresses have interacted with Whedon, who could be victims of his abuse or witnesses to his misconduct. And even if they don’t give more testimony, people can always use #IStandWithRayFisher or #IStandWithCharismaCarpenter to show their support for those who speak up and make sure Whedon is held accountable for their actions. As Benson said, this type of abuse has long-lasting effects, even some 20 years later. Hopefully, by talking, Benson and others can begin to recover, and the directors will become more aware of the environment they create on their sets.
