HBO confirmed that Joss Whedon will not appear in The Nevers’ marketing as more members of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast allege his abusive behavior.
HBO confirmed that Joss Whedon will not appear in the marketing of The Nevers.
The news comes immediately after Charisma Carpenter alleged that Whedon engaged in abusive behavior towards her on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Y Angel. “When I read Charisma Carpenter’s accounts, it was heartbreaking,” said Casey Bloys, director of content for HBO and HBO Max. THR.
Whedon created The Nevers and served as a showrunner before resigning in November 2020, citing his physical exhaustion from doing the series amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “In The Nevers, left the program. You’ve already seen his statement, “Bloys noted. He went on to say that Carpenter’s indictment” has not really affected “the promotional campaign for the series, noting that The Nevers‘teaser trailer didn’t mention Whedon. “Yes, you would expect to have that name [in marketing materials] but the show and creativity will speak for themselves. A marketing campaign cannot do much; spectacle and creativity must stand up for themselves. “

Other Buffy cast members have lent their support to Carpenter, with Amber Benson writing “Buffy It was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. [Carpenter] She tells the truth and I support her 100%. “Sarah Michelle Gellar also expressed her support for Carpenter, writing:” While I am proud that my name is associated with Buffy Summers, I do not want to be associated forever with the name Joss Whedon. “Michelle Trachtenberg then thanked Gellar for his post before claiming Whedon behaved inappropriately towards her at the Buffy set.
Whedon has recently faced other allegations of misconduct and abuse in his film and television productions, beginning with allegations of League of Justice actor Ray Fisher, which led to a WarnerMedia investigation. The investigation concluded in December 2020, and WarnerMedia said “corrective action has been taken.” Fisher said that he believed Whedon’s departure from The Nevers he related to the investigation, adding: “I have no intention of allowing Joss Whedon to use the old Hollywood tactic of ‘get out’, ‘walk away’ or ‘walk away’ to cover up his terrible behavior.”
Created by Joss Whedon, The Nevers stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare. The series premieres April 11 on HBO.
