Mandalorian spinoff of Cara Dune was scrapped after Gina Carano controversy in November

A series focusing on The Mandalorian’s Gina Carano’s Cara Dune was scrapped by Lucasfilm in November after the actor’s erratic posts on social media.

The rumored Mandalorian Gina Carano’s Cara Dune-centric spinoff series was apparently very much on the cards until the actor sparked controversy in November 2020.

“[Disney] I’ve been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw, “said a source. THR in reference to Carano being fired from The mandalorian. Sources also noted that a Cara Dune series was to be announced at Disney’s Investor Day presentation in December, but the plans were scrapped after Carano shared posts on social media that suggested the possibility of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election and discouraged the wearing of masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On February 10, #FireGinaCarano started trending on Twitter after the actor shared a post from another social media account detailing how the strong fascist influence in Europe made it easier for the Nazis to go after Jews by making the rest of the world will hate them. The post ends by asking: “How is that different from hating someone for their political opinions?” Notably, Carano herself is an outspoken conservative.

Shortly thereafter, Lucasfilm issued a statement saying: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. However, her social media posts denigrate people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable. “

While no Cara Dune series was finally announced during Disney’s Investor Day presentation, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Disney + would soon be home to New Republic Rangers, which would connect to The mandalorian and was expected to introduce Cara Dune in some way.
