This year’s Super Bowl ratings didn’t match last year’s, but its annual Puppy Bowl competitive event drew more viewers than in 2020.
Television ratings for Sunday’s Super Bowl LV were down markedly from last year, but Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XVII earlier the same day garnered a few hundred thousand more viewers compared to last year, indicating that while soccer fans may have grown weary of their sport, lovers still flock to theirs.
The beloved canine event, which features multiple puppies of all breeds and mixes frolicking on a miniature soccer field-inspired playground, drew 2.1 million viewers Sunday afternoon, according to The coat. Last year’s Puppy Bowl XVI drew 1.85 million dog watchers.

Unsurprisingly, Pigskin significantly outperformed the Cubs in the NFL’s annual ranking powerhouse, with the NFL showdown on CBS Sunday night between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drawing in more than 96 million viewers. But last year, more than 101 million viewers tuned in to Super Bowl LIV between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers on FOX.
The Chiefs defeated the 49ers 31-20 in last year’s championship game, but suffered a lopsided loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday 31-9.
Meanwhile, Team Ruff beat Team Fluff 73-69 in Sunday’s Puppy Bowl. Marshall, a Boston terrier, was the MVP of the game: Most Valuable Puppy.
Super Bowl television ratings on Sunday were the lowest since 2007. Meanwhile, Puppy Bowl ratings had risen for the first time in three years.
The Kansas City bosses appeared in the first Super Bowl in 1967, losing to the Green Bay Packers 35-10. The annual championship game has become nothing less than the sports industry’s premier event, with viewers from around the world tuning in, and it has also become well known for its high-profile commercial debuts from its advertisers, as well as your big budget part time entertainment. The low-key Puppy Bowl, by contrast, debuted in 2005 as alternative entertainment for animal lovers, as well as those not interested in sports or the spectacle surrounding the big game. The event raises awareness of animal adoption and all participating puppies are available for adoption into forever homes.
However, like the Super Bowl, the Puppy Bowl has gotten more and more flamboyant, with this year’s contest hosted by Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg. The two-hour recorded event is repeated throughout the day, including directly in front of the Super Bowl.
Next year’s Super Bowl LVI and Puppy Bowl XVIII will take place on February 6, 2022.
