DC celebrated the Lunar New Year by announcing a new one-shot, titled DC FESTIVAL OF HEROES: Celebrating the Asian Superhero, to mark Asia Pacific American Heritage Month in May. The comic book publisher has a wide range of characters, as well as creatives, with Asian heritage. This new anthology issue is meant to highlight many of those names from across the DC universe.
In May 2020, DC celebrated Asia Pacific American Heritage Month with the release of the graphic novel. Superman crushes the Klan. Both Yang and Gurihiru return for this new one-shot along with many other notable writers and artists, including Greg Pak (Batman / Superman), Alyssa Wong (Sensational Wonder Woman) and Dustin Nguyen (American vampire). The 96-page anthology will feature numerous stories focusing on Asian characters, such as Katana, the Atom, and Lady Shiva. Three notable entries include a Ram V story (Catwoman) which will focus on the backstory of Shoes, Catwoman’s protégé, a story by Mariko Tamaki (Future state: dark detective) for Batgirl by Cassandra Cain and a story by Minh Lê (Green Lantern: Legacy) for Vietnamese American Green Lantern Tai Pham with art by Trung Le Nguyen (The magic fish). The theme will also be based on a larger main story by Yang, who will collaborate with artist Bernard Chang (Superman). Those details aside, the plot remains a mystery, but DC teased that more details about this specific story will be revealed before the one-time releases in May.
It’s always nice to see one of the major editors celebrate the diversity in the comics space and this one-shot seems like a great way to sum up the talents of many prominent Asian creatives alongside celebrating the distinctive cultural identity of many beloved characters. of DC. Getting what appears to be a mini-sequel story for Green Lantern: Legacy It’s also definitely worth the wait and Yang’s mystery story is especially exciting when you consider how strong an outlet he is.
