The role play Disco Elysium uses a skill system based on the old pencil and paper role-playing games, dice. Two six-sided dice to be specific. While these dice are the main contributing factor in how a player will break through in the game, they are not everything.

Unlike many newer games that are based on the player character’s stats or a percentage that is completely behind the scenes of a game’s schedule, these dice are at the forefront. Just like in paper and pencil role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, determine whether a skill test has been successful or not. How does this work exactly? Let’s find out.

How dice work in Disco Elysium

This RPG relies heavily on a player getting to know their character inside and out. One of the key factors in this is knowing the player character’s stats. There are four main statistics called Intelligence, Psyche, Physics, and Motor. Each of these stats affects six abilities below them.

Intelligence, for example, affects a player character’s reasoning ability. The six skills under that statistic are Logic, Encyclopedia, Rhetoric, Drama, Conceptualization, and Visual Calculus. This stat and his abilities are important to a player who wants to solve the game as some kind of Sherlock Holmes type character. Depending on how high a player’s stat is on this, it will make these types of controls easier or harder.

However, this is not the only aspect that affects the player’s ability to pass a test. The player character will also get different positive and negative stats from his clothes. This can affect the probability of a skill check enough that it is worth the player’s time to verify these items.

Each of the checks a player faces will appear with the probability that the player passes the check. Some tests are repeatable once the character has leveled up and increased that skill, but others can have serious consequences for failures that can never be done again. Each skill test will have a passing probability percentage along with a difficulty rating.

Difficulty ratings range from Trivial to Impossible:

  • Trivial – Requires a roll of six or more.
  • Easy – Requires a roll of eight or more
  • Medium – Requires a roll of 10 or more.
  • Challenging – Requires a roll of 12 or more.
  • Formidable – Requires a roll of 13 or more.
  • Legendary – Requires a roll of 14 or more.
  • Heroic – Requires a roll of 15 or more.
  • Pious – Requires a roll of 16 or more.
  • Impossible – Requires a roll of 18 or more.

With two six-sided dice, it can seem like an impossible task to get anything beyond a Challenging rating. However, this roll of the dice is always added to the player character’s attribute score. Which will help make these rolls easier. Players should also take note of natural failure and natural success. If a player gets snake eyes or two, they automatically fail the test. If a player rolls two sixes, they will automatically succeed even if the skill check is well beyond the player character’s abilities.
