The Force is an energy that unites all life in the Galaxy. It is not something controlled by humans or people of a specific culture; it flows through everyone, through every living being. This means that almost anyone in the Galaxy can have an attuned Force sensitivity and can become a Jedi, although it is definitely rarer for some species.
The pre-empire of the Jedi Order was aware of those with Force sensibilities and sought them out to join the order. This meant that there were many famous Jedi of all ranks who were not human. However, across the two timelines, despite their fewer numbers and possibly in more discriminatory ways, there have also been quite a handful of Sith aliens.
10 Jedi – Luminara Unduli (and Barriss Offee)
Luminara Unduli and her apprentice Barriss Offee were two Jedi Mirialan during the time of the Galactic Republic, both hailing from the planet Mirial, with very similar looking green / yellow skin and facial tattoos.
Luminara never made it to the Jedi High Council prior to Order 66 and its eventual death, having failed to train Barriss Offee beyond the Padawan point before becoming disillusioned with the Jedi. The two play major roles during the Clone War and the following television series.
9 Sith – Darth Talon
Born and raised in the form of the Sith on Korriban in the Legends timeline, Darth Talon was a powerful and loyal Sith who was an apprentice to Darth Krayt and at one point took none other than Cade Skywalker as his apprentice.
Talon was not only a Twi’lek but also a Lethan Twi’lek, meaning that she possessed the rarest of skin colors, red. This red skin was covered in black tattoos, inscribed on Talon by his master for his victories. Talon was a third generation Sith and one of the few Twi’lek known to have been Sith.
8 Jedi – Aayla Secura
Returning to Jedi of the Galactic Republic, Aayla Secura was a Jedi General in the Clone War, commanding the 327th Star Corps with Bly at her side. Unlike Luminara, the public sees Secura’s death when she is shot dead against Felucia during Order 66.
Trained in the ways of the Force by Quinlan Vos, Secura was a Twi’lek (blue skinned) Rutian born on Ryloth whose early life lacks canonical information. Like Luminara, Secura never made it to the Jedi High Council before her death, but was still remembered, even speaking to Rey during her climactic battle with Palpatine.
7 Sith – Darth Tenebrous
Not necessarily the first name fans think of when it comes to Sith from the Legends timeline, Darth Tenebrous remains one of the most famous and important alien Sith we know of.
Tenebrous was a bith and a scientific genius obsessed with the future, as was his apprentice, none other than Darth Plagueis. He also had another apprentice, Darth Venamis, a fellow Bith, who did not have the same reputation as Tenebrous and was never formally given the title of Darth.
6 Jedi: Most of the Jedi High Council
In the time between The Phantom Menace (32 BBY) and Revenge of the Sith (19 BBY), the Jedi High Council consisted of twenty unique members, sixteen of whom were non-humans, all of whom were well known in the Star Wars fandom.
Yaddle was a member of the unknown species that Grogu and Yoda are a part of. Then there are Yarael Poof (Quermian), Coleman Trebor (Vurk), Oppo Rancisis (Thisspiasian), Even Piell (Lannik), Adi Gallia (Tholothian), Stass Allie (Tholothian), Coleman Kcaj (Ongree), Saesee Tiin (Iktotchi), Eeth Koth (Iridonian) and Agen Kolar (Zabrak). Four council members stand out above the rest in terms of popularity (excluding Yoda), Shaak Tii (Togruta), Ki-Adi Mundi (Cerean), Kit Fisto (Nautolan), and Plo Koon (Kel Dor).
5 Sith – Marka Ragnos
Marka Ragnos is a bit of a cheat for this list, but he’s one of the most famous Sith of all. Star Wars, and there are few completely alien Sith more famous than him or more powerful and influential in the Sith bloodline.
Ragnos is a half-breed, half human and half Sith. Not the order, but the species. The Sith species were red-skinned, with bony spurs and facial tentacles, with a predisposition for the dark side of the Force, originating from Korriban and later residing on Ziost. Ragnos was one of the greatest Sith to ever live and even lived past death as a Force Ghost in his tomb on Korriban.
4 Jedi – Ahsoka Tano
Without a doubt one of the most significant characters of Star Wars Story, Ahsoka Tano’s journey has been sensational to watch as she has gone from being a nuisance to being adored and finally finding her way into live action.
While she is famous for not being a Jedi, she was once a Jedi Padawan, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice, an older brother to her. She eventually left the Order, of course, but the Togruta is a better hero than almost all Jedi in that era anyway.
3 Sith – Darth Plagueis
The story of Darth Plagueis in Legends is phenomenal. James Luceno’s novel is one of the best ever produced for Star WarsBut Canon has yet to delve into the famous Sith Lord, something that is sure to come one day.
Plagueis, also known to the public eye as Hego Damask, was a Muun, a kind of thin man known for leading the Intergalactic Banking Clan during the time of the Republic. Plagueis was an immensely powerful, tough, intelligent, and obsessed Sith Lord who is crucial to the Skywalker saga and is far and away from the most famous of his kind who have barely been featured in content.
2 Jedi – Yoda
While Ahsoka Tano is incredibly popular and one of the most incredible characters produced by the franchise, her lack of live action and movie appearances has led to a lack of exposure to more casual fans, something that plays in Yoda’s favor.
The Jedi High Council was mentioned above, and although Yoda heads this, he is far above the rest of the alien Jedi in terms of fame and ability, although we don’t actually know his species; However, this seems to be close to changing thanks to Grogu.
one Sith – Darth Maul
Ahsoka Tano left the Jedi Order on her own accord. Darth Maul, on the other hand, was presumed dead and replaced by his master, eventually moving to the Galaxy on his own to wreak havoc and maintain power, removing the Darth from his name.
However, he was still a Sith apprentice. Hailing from Dathomir, Maul was a Dathomirian Zabrak covered in black tattoos on his red skin. Palpatine took him and trained him from a young age, and like Ahsoka, he set out on a journey to become one of the most fantastic characters of all. Star Wars, with an absolutely incredible arc between The Phantom Menace and his actual death in Rebels.
