Vince Vaughn taught his teen co-stars how to play his character ‘Freaky’

Vince Vaughn has decades of experience playing a variety of movie roles. However, he faced a unique challenge in the past year. Rare, where the actor had to play a young teenage girl named Millie who is trapped in the body of a giant middle-aged man. Celeste O’Connor, who played the role of Millies’ friend, revealed in a recent interview that Vaughn used to consult her and her other young co-stars on how to play a teenager.

“It was amazing to be able to work with [Vince Vaughn] and learn from him as someone so talented and so respected, especially in terms of comedy, because he had never done comedy before. So I feel like I learned a lot from him, and he was also very open with us and receptive to all the young people. So it was really nice to be able to learn from him, and also that I felt like he was learning from us, because there were a lot of times where we would improvise, and Vince would say, “Oh what would a teenager say here?” I remember, I think they put this on the movie, the hashtags! When he was in the car, saying, “#stressed, #excited,” that was something we improved on and kind of brainstormed. So it was really amazing to be able to work with him. “

Rare tells the story of a serial killer known as Blissfield Butcher, played by Vaughn, who enjoys nothing but the brutal murder and dismemberment of his innocent victims. A freak accident with an enchanted dagger places the Butcher on the body of Millie, an outcast teenager. While the Butcher is delighted to have easy access to a new group of victims, Millie, trapped in the Butcher’s old body, races against time to reverse the magical curse before the body change becomes permanent.

Much of the film’s comedy stems from watching Vaughn play Millie inside Butcher’s body. One of the most memorable scenes in the film has Vaughn’s character performing a complicated handshake with O’Connor’s character. According to O’Connor, the handshake was something he made up on the spot with Vaughn on the day of filming.

“Honestly, we came up with that the day of! We improvised it. It took like hours and hours and hours to film that fight sequence in the kitchen, which was also another very fun day and a challenging day. At the end of that, Vince said , “Oh, what could I do with you that only the three of us would know how to do? Some muscle memory. “And we were like,” Oh my God, handshake! “So we made it up on the spot.”

Directed by Christopher Landon, Rare stars Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton, Celeste O’Connor, Misha Oshervich, Uriah Shelton, Alan Ruck, Katie Finneran, and Dana Drori. The movie is now available digitally and on Blu-ray. See the full interview at CBR.
