Endgame director confirms Captain America returned to main timeline

Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo reiterated that Captain America traveled to a “branch reality” and returned to give Falcon his shield.

Avengers Endgame Co-director Joe Russo has confirmed that Steve Rogers traveled between realities to conclude his story. Avengers: Endgame It involved not only the plot of Infinity Stone, but also the stories of various characters, including the original Avengers Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Captain America (Chris Evans). The film was a huge success, becoming the highest grossing film of all time.

Despite that success, fans have argued over some of the best points of Avengers Endgame, like Steve Rogers’ ambiguous ending. In the movie, Steve volunteers to take the Infinity Stones to their rightful places on the timeline, choosing to stay in the past and live the rest of his life with his first love, Peggy in the process. Carter (Hayley Atwell). The logistics of this move have confused Avengers fans since the film’s release, and even the film’s creators have disagreed on what it means. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely believe that Steve went back to his own past; but EndgameThe directors, the Russo brothers, have stated that Steve jumped into a branch reality to be with Peggy before returning to the original timeline to bequeath his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).

Despite the confusion and potential plot holes, it seems the Russians are sticking to their story. In an interview about the Lights Camera Bar stool podcast (via Cinemablend), Joe Russo confirmed once again that Steve had traveled to a branch of the reality show. Joe Russo’s full comment can be read below:

One thing that is clear that Anthony and I have discussed, I don’t know if we have discussed it publicly at all, Cap would have to have traveled back to the main timeline. That’s something that, yes, it would have been in a secondary reality, but you’d have to travel back to the main timeline to give that shield to Sam Wilson.

In our internal logic that we defined in the room, that was the choice we made. Based on everything that happened, he would have been in a branch reality and then he had to have changed to this, so he jumped from one to the other and handed him the shield.

It’s unclear which “room” Russo is referring to, as this explanation still doesn’t match the writers’ understanding of the Captain America ending. The inconsistencies within this Avengers Endgame The explanation, particularly regarding old Steve’s return to mainstream reality, is likely to continue to annoy fans unless their questions are answered in a future MCU project. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its meticulously plotted interlocking stories, careful Easter eggs, and clear internal logic (at least as clear as superhero logic). That the conclusion to the story of an important and beloved character in its biggest movie yet is so hazy is not only a disappointment to fans, but a drop in the quality of Marvel as a studio.

There is still hope that the Avengers Endgame Timeline issues could be cleared up. Despite claiming to be done with the character, Evans is in talks for one or more upcoming MCU projects. A comeback like Steve Rogers would be the perfect way to put the Endgame inconsistencies to bed. However, Evans’ presence is not entirely necessary to clarify the plot; some exhibition lines in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier it would be just as effective. Either way, hopefully Marvel will address the lingering Avengers Endgame questions in a future project.
