The premiere episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 17 may have subtly prompted the end of the Owen Hunt arc, as fans of the show pointed out. That is how.
Owen Hunt is still part of Grey’s Anatomy, but viewers could be saying goodbye to him in season 17, as the series could have caused his death earlier in the season. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC in 2005, and although it started as a mid-season replacement, it quickly earned praise from critics and viewers, allowing it to continue for many more years. Now with more than 10 seasons and counting, Grey’s Anatomy It shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, even if many of the fan-favorite characters have left and the ones that remain may surprise the audience by leaving at any moment.

Like any other medical drama Grey’s Anatomy follows the lives of surgical interns, residents, and assistants as they go out of their way to juggle their professional and personal lives, which often end up overlapping and blending, giving way to a lot of drama in and out of the hospital. Grey’s Anatomy is directed by Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo), who started as an intern at Seattle Grace Hospital and has now become chief of general surgery at the same venue, and through her, viewers have met a variety of characters, both doctors as patients, who have won the hearts of the audience. Among them is Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), a trauma surgeon who has been through a lot not only on the series, but also before joining Seattle Grace Hospital, which has made him very popular with Grey’s Anatomy fans.
Owen Hunt made his debut in Grey’s Anatomy season 5 and made a great first impression by performing a tracheostomy on a man with a pen, earning the admiration of resident (and his future wife) Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). Owen was a surgeon in the United States Army specializing in trauma surgery, and as a result, he had an unstable personality and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which he struggled to overcome. Like many other characters on the series, Owen has been through a lot of ups and downs in both his personal and professional life, and when season 17 began, he had just gotten out of a relationship with Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), and because that’s not enough. Complicated, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the hospital, requiring the help of all the doctors, and this could be the beginning of the end for Owen.
Many fans noted that there was something strange (and dark) about a conversation between Owen and Teddy on the premiere episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 17, in which Owen admitted that working on the front lines of the pandemic was causing him to rethink his will and future together, and even brought up his concerns about what would happen to his children if he died. Teddy told him that she “didn’t agree with him dying” and then had to go back to work, and Owen replied “let’s talk later then”. Fans were immediately alarmed by this, as Grey’s Anatomy has previously (and subtly) foreshadowed major events and deaths: in season 5, Meredith began dreaming of Derek’s death in an accident, which happened in season 11, and also in season 5, Arizona mentioned her fear of flying , which was justified in season 8 when the plane where she, Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh) crashed.
Now, while Meredith is the one fighting COVID in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, fans are used to the series having plot twists and it will surely survive, but another character might have to go, and it could be Owen. If Owen’s arc is going to end in season 17, hopefully the writers of Grey’s Anatomy It will give you a suitable ending that suits the character, as they are not exactly known for handling their character exits well.
