Two members of the Guardians of the Galaxy have just given the students of Doctor Strange’s Strange Academy a lesson they will never forget.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Strange Academy # 8 by Skottie Young, Humberto Ramos, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, out now.
Strange Academy students have faced many challenges lately, one of which was an ancient race of tree-like beings hell-bent on consuming them and their mystical energies. Fortunately, the faculty were there to help them return as safely as possible, although that does not mean that they all recovered easily.
For many of the students, there has never been a better time for vacation, and while they won’t have one in the usual sense, they will be able to visit faraway lands courtesy of a school field trip. As good as it sounds, it’s so much better thanks to two Guardians of the Galaxy guest speakers that you’ll learn from, even if they’re not exactly the best mentors.

Professor Kanna has assembled a group of students for a trip to an alien world where they will meet and follow special guests Rocket Raccoon and Groot. While the two Guardians of the Galaxy veterans are two of the funniest teachers kids have ever had, their background in the mystical arts is something that, for lack of a better description, simply doesn’t exist. As everyone walks through the treacherous terrain of the alien jungle, Rocket explains that magic is not something relegated solely to Earth or other inherently mystical realms, but is something that can be found throughout the universe. Even in a strange world where he may or may not have been dropped by a tall, arboreal guy while venturing out with his furry little friend.
It seems that the Mortum Orb, the mystical artifact the students are looking for, was actually something Rocket and Groot were commissioned to find for Kanna several years ago. The two of them lost him along the way somehow, and now they are keeping their promise to take him away in the most indirect way possible. Still, it’s a good way to get the kids out of school and get something done, even if it’s more than they bargained for. Inside a cave where the orb should be located, the group is attacked by a huge monster bird known as the Scribbit. The beast with half a dozen fanged beaks is chasing her with her slightly less terrifying children right next to her.
Fortunately, Calvin can get in touch with Emily at the academy, and along with Zelma he can transport them all home, even the Scribbit who vomits Iric from being knocked down by several Mindless. It’s hard to say exactly what all the kids learned during their extraterrestrial exploration, other than not going into strange caves, obviously. Considering what happened when they entered the swamp at night, it’s almost hard to believe they hadn’t discovered it yet. On the other hand, Rocket Raccoon has never been the best role model, even if he is a born leader. Maybe it’s time for Doctor Strange to focus a little more on the basics for a while.
