William Shatner hasn’t played Star Trek Captain / Admiral James T. Kirk in decades, but he won’t rule out a possible return, under one condition.

William Shatner has not played Star trek James T. Kirk in decades, but the actor does not rule out ever returning to the role, if one condition is met.

“If they wrote an interesting paper and could explain the 55-year difference, I might consider it,” says Shatner. Reverse. “But right now, I’m very busy and Star Trek is in my past.”

Indeed it is, as Shatner last played Captain-turned-Admiral James Tiberius Kirk in 1994. Star Trek: Generations – a literal generation ago. However, bringing Kirk back might take more than explaining a time difference. In the film, the legendary Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, meet for the first and only time through the realm of time deception known as the Nexus. Kirk is killed when he and Picard successfully prevent Dr. Tolian Soran, played by Malcolm McDowell, from destroying numerous systems to reach the Nexus.

Of course, the death of a character did not stop The mandalorian to perform a similar stunt with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, whose character had died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. A younger Skywalker made a cameo in the show’s second season finale, played by Hamill but with the benefit of CGI age regression. New seasons are currently being developed for both shows. Shatner could also reprise the character’s voice, if Kirk appears in the next Star Trek: Lower Decks or Star Trek: Prodigy animated series.

One of Shatner’s earliest and most memorable roles was that of a frightened airline passenger who repeatedly saw a strange gremlin on the wing of the plane in 1963.
