On ABC’s Big Sky, Rick’s memory loss has left many confused, but thankfully, the show’s latest episode solved the riddle.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Big Sky season 1 episode 8, “The End is Near,” now available on ABC.

On ABC Big sky, fans have been divided regarding Rick’s (John Carroll Lynch) memory loss after he was shot by Cassie upon discovering his human trafficking ring. She, like Jenny, believes that she is faking her amnesia, but it is true that they are personally engaged and excited when she killed her ex-lover, Cody, to cover up her crimes.

However, little by little, they discover that Rick may well be a long way off, and indeed possibly on his way to redemption if he can help find his old business partner, Ron. But as the latest episode reveals at a key moment, it could all be bait and switch on the part of the former Montana state trooper.

Cassie and Jenny don’t believe Rick’s lawyer or the doctors that he lost his memory tied to the last five years. Cassie even pretends to be a nurse, walking in and counting the moments that led to her shooting him point-blank to save the victims, but he’s a blank canvas. Rick constantly apologizes for everything, and after passing a lie detector test, Cassie truly believes that he is telling the truth.

Jenny is still reluctant to accept it, so she walks into her room to remind her of what she did to Cody, but Rick can’t remember. They had a glimmer of hope when it seemed like he recognized a victim, Grace, but since then, he has become a man-boy again. Even his wife, Merrilee, admits that as much as she would like him to confess, it won’t happen. However, things get interesting in the final act when the insane Ron takes away another boy, Erik, who finds out his whereabouts.

Merrilee has an emotional moment, pleading with the honest, religious man she married to come back and help find the boy. She tells him that she will forgive him as long as he remembers where Ron is. Sadly, it is an unfortunate failure as Rick is unable to process or remember the identity of his ex. But when Merrilee walks away, she hears him tap his fingers, which seems to scare her.

The episode ends there, but it is possible that this is a tic that Rick shows when he is lying. It seems like he may well have been playing everyone, which is what Merrilee may have realized. If that’s the case, they’ll have to quickly prove it if they want any chance of saving Ron’s boy.

Big Sky stars Katheryn Winnick, Ryan Phillips, Kylie Bunbury, Brian Geraghty, and Valerie Mahaffey. It airs Tuesdays at 10 pm ET on ABC.
