HBO Max and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot production company have teamed up for a dark Constantine series featuring a young and diverse take on the character.
A new Constantine live-action series has been confirmed for HBO Max, from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.
According to Term, this new version of John Constantine will be darker than previous versions, with the titular star described as a “young Londoner.” Another change is that Constantine will be cast as a diverse protagonist. Guy Bolton will write the script and a writers room will be set up for March.
An earlier report from The Illuminerdi stated that HBO Max’s Bad Robot and JJ Abrams were teaming up on a darker Constantine series with an eye for a BIPOC artist. Matt Ryan previously played Constantine on an NBC series from 2014-2015. Ryan’s Constantine was canceled after one season, though he would later go on to The CW’s Arrowverse as a member of DC Legends of Tomorrow.
Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in Keanu Reeves Constantine movie, revealed that a sequel to the fan-favorite movie is in the works. Stormare posted a photo of his Constantine character to Instagram, with a caption underneath that read: “In Constantine, Peter Stormare plays one of the best versions of Satan in the history of cinema. “Stormare continued with the simple caption” Sequel In The Works. “
Constantine would join Abrams Dark justice league series on HBO Max, which he is developing with his wife Katie McGrath. Variety reports Constantine would tie to Dark justice league. “What an amazing start to our partnership with the incredibly imaginative Bad Robot team under JJ and Katie,” said HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly in an April 2020 statement. “What could be better than an original idea. by JJ and then Warner Bros. to let them loose on the iconic IP of Stephen King and the DC Universe and provide more must-have programming on HBO Max. “
