Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid pokes fun at a brutal fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero opens the film. The wildly popular fighting video game franchise previously received the live-action treatment in the 1990s with a short-lived franchise. Now, more than two decades later, Mortal Kombat has another chance to experience the “big screen,” which will also include the film that will debut on HBO Max in April.

After the launch of Mortal Kombatof the trailer, director Simon McQuoid spoke with IGN to analyze exciting images. This conversation included McQuoid sparking an epic fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion that is momentarily seen in the trailer. He revealed that the showdown between the legendary fighters is part of the opening of the film and is a particularly unpleasant exchange.
It really is about seeing [Scorpion’s] evolution on screen and the ingredients, both emotional and physical, of why he becomes a Scorpio. And that is explained throughout the beginning of our movie. And it’s a pretty brutal and nasty fight.
The fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero that opens Mortal Kombat It won’t be exactly what some fans might expect. The encounter takes place in feudal Japan, centuries before the current story of the film. Scorpion does not yet have powers at this time and is known as Hanzo Hasashi. But, this sequence is also where Scorpion first made his signature kunai weapon. Considering that Hanzo is expected to be out of commission to date, this brutal fight is expected to conclude with Sub-Zero as the victor.

The trailers sparked more fights between the pair, so it looks like Scorpion will have a rematch at some point. His multiple fights and those among other contestants featured throughout the Mortal Kombat The trailer highlights how action-packed the movie will be. And with two fights between Scorpion and Sub-Zero thus far, there is a good chance a third will take place to show who is truly the better fighter.
