SWORD’s plans to use Vision to create sentient weapons likely stem from Avengers: Endgame and the need to protect the world from the next Thanos.
Avengers EndgameThe invasion of Earth by Thanos (Josh Brolin) was the probable cause as to why SWORD intends to develop sensitive weapons from the technology of Vision’s (Paul Bettany) corpse, as seen in WandaVision. Vision has been miraculously resurrected by Wanda Maxmioff (Elizabeth Olsen) and is living as her husband on her Westview, NJ reality sitcom, which she magically sealed inside The Hex. But of course, SWORD wants to reacquire Vision and continue his agenda to protect the world from another Thanos.
SWORD – Sentient Weapons Observation and Response Division – was founded by Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), although it is not yet clear when exactly after the events of Captain Marvel SWORD was born in 1995. SWORD’s focus was on space and alien missions, and its existence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a bit retcon since SWORD was not mentioned in the MCU before. WandaVision. But apparently, SWORD has been operational for years and must not have been affiliated with SHIELD, as it continued despite the acquisition of SHIELD by Hydra and subsequent collapse. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was believed to work for SWORD alongside the Skrulls in Spider-Man: Far From Home; if that’s the case, then that movie was SWORD’s unofficial introduction to the MCU.

Of course, Vision (and Scarlet Witch) died during the Battle of Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos removed the Mind Stone from his forehead, killing the Synthézoid. There was a gap five years later Infinity war and the main story of Avengers Endgame where the world had to carry on despite the absence of half its population, and the Avengers’ time stealing from the Infinity Stones to resurrect the lives Thanos took proved successful. Meanwhile, the Thanos of 2014 used the Quantum Realm to reach the present of the MCU of 2023 to conquer Earth. All of Earth’s defenders rallied alongside the Avengers to drive Thanos’s army back, but the Mad Titan’s invasion was brief but devastating. Thanos’ ship destroyed the Avengers compound with missiles and it took Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) to sacrifice his life using the Infinity Gauntlet to end Thanos once and for all.
WandaVision takes place only three weeks after the Blip in Avengers Endgame brought back to life the billions of souls Thanos killed with the Infinity Gauntlet. Fans learned from Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Maria’s daughter who was resurrected by the Blip, all about SWORD’s current activities, as the agency has now taken over the defense of Earth against future alien invasions, and had possession of Vision’s corpse. Taking the organization’s name literally, it was revealed that SWORD was developing sensitive weapons and it has to be out of fear of another Thanos.
Endgame changed the way the MCU handles alien threats
Prior to Avengers Endgame, the MCU’s response to alien attacks was made by Nick Fury and SHIELD Fury invented the Avengers Initiative after meeting Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in 1995, but it wasn’t until Tony Stark’s debut as Iron Man that Fury began to actively recruit for the Avengers. Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) arrival in New Mexico, where he and his Asgardian friends fought the Destroyer, created an urgency in Fury to form the Avengers, which was compounded by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) invading a SHIELD facility and stealing. the Tesseract. which was the Spatial Infinity Stone.
In Fury’s own words, the idea behind the Avengers was to have a superhuman response team. “to fight the battles we never could”, referring to both superpowered villains and aliens like Loki and the Chitauri. Fury even told the World Security Council as such after the Avengers defeated Loki at the Battle of New York: “[The Avengers] surely they are [dangerous]. And everyone knows it. Everybody knows “. After closing SHIELD in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there seemed to be no organized defense against an alien threat other than the Avengers. In Infinity war Iron Man was considered as the main defender of Earth against the Black Order as the Avengers were in ruins afterwards Captain America: Civil War.
It is clear that after Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe in Infinity war and then came back to finish work on Endgame that Earth needed a more organized and powerful military response beyond relying primarily on the Avengers, especially since the Avengers’ status as a team is questionable after their final victory in Endgame. SWORD’s retcon, which has been around for an unspecified number of years, is that the MCU addresses the need for a specialized agency dealing with aliens. (Although WandaVision, SWORD seems to work very similarly to SHIELD, as Wanda Maximoff is not an alien threat).
Did SWORD plan to create sentient weapons from Vision’s corpse?
WandaVision revealed that somewhere in between Avengers: Infinity War Y Avengers Endgame, SWORD acquired Vision’s corpse from Wakanda. It’s unclear how this was accomplished, but Vision’s technology became the property of SWORD, a fact that Wanda Maximoff discovered shortly after attending Tony Stark’s funeral in Endgame. Wanda then attacked SWORD headquarters and stole Vision’s corpse before fleeing to Westview and creating her television comedy fantasy world within The Hex, which magically sealed Westview, New Jersey from the rest of the world.
SWORD Acting Director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg) told Monica Rambeau that in the five years she was dead, the agency went from manned space missions to “Robotics, Nanotechnology, AI: Sensitive Weapons As It Says On The Door”. Obviously, the most advanced artificial intelligence machine in existence was Vision, so SWORD needed his remains to further his revised agenda of protecting the planet from new alien threats. Some fans even speculate that SWORD’s “sentient weapons” could turn out to be Sentinels, the dangerous mutant-hunting robots that will become a threat to the X-Men when they finally debut in the MCU. Regardless, Vision was part of a top-secret project codenamed “Cataract” that Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) unlocked in the encrypted files of SWORD and Hayward. It stands to reason that SWORD wants to create a new legion of sentient visions as weapons against the next Thanos.
How WandaVision changes SWORD’s plan
Wanda Maximoff was the proverbial wrench in SWORD’s plans and Tyler Hayward redirected his agency to deal with Scarlet Witch. While SWORD views Vision as stolen technology and property, Wanda has a very different view of Vision: he is the love of her life and she made Vision her husband in her fantasy inside the Shangri-La in Westview. It is also clear that Vision cannot live outside the hex and without Wanda’s magic; Interestingly, Vision doesn’t have his memories of who he is and who the Avengers are, even within the hex.
Nevertheless WandaVision finally ending, it’s unclear how SWORD’s original plans for Vision can move forward if Wanda Maximoff is protecting Vision from them. And yet Earth would likely benefit from SWORD’s sensitive weapons as a line of defense against aliens, so Wanda’s wishes could very well be putting the planet in danger in the big picture. No one in the MCU will ever forget what Thanos did and the facts are that there will be more aliens arriving on Earth (or have already arrived) who will have similar ambitions to destroy humanity. Thanos permanently changed the MCU into Avengers Endgame and now SWORD is picking up the pieces developing weapons beyond the Avengers, but time will tell if they will retrieve Vision’s corpse to complete their mission when WandaVision it’s over.
