In the world of anime, suffering and tragedy are more than expected; in most cases, it is an unavoidable product of its own existence. The difficulty pits heroes and villains alike, defining who they are and the future as it unfolds before them.

However, the lives of some characters seem to be just a series of unfortunate events, with little to no respite. By looking at these people and the circumstances around them, we can better appreciate the tribulations they have faced and the various ways they have faced them.

10 Tatsumi (Akame Ga Kill!)

tatsumi, Akame Ga Kill

Tatsumi’s life has never stopped being difficult. Born in an impoverished town, he promised to go to the capital with his friends to return with enough wealth to support his town. Instead, he discovered that they had been tortured to death and almost suffered the same fate at the hand of their “hostess.”

After Night Raid intervened, they effectively impressed him at their service, saying that they would kill him if he refused. He was then stalked by the deranged leader of the Jaegers and would eventually die in the line of duty.

9 Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto)

Sasuke Uchiha was forced to watch his brother massacre his entire family at a young age. He spent years training to avenge his parents and clan, even betraying the Blade to see justice done.

After he had killed Itachi, Obito informed him of the genjutsu master’s noble intentions. This not only completely invalidated his only purpose in life up to that point, it also rendered his sacrifices meaningless. However, instead of cutting his losses, Sasuke would only accelerate the depravity he would visit upon Konoha and the rest of the world.

8 Polnareff (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

Polnareff has easily experienced the hardest life of all Jojo supporting character. He is nearly killed in his quest to avenge his sister’s death and was forced to watch two of his friends die in order to ensure his survival (multiple fingers and toes against Vanilla Ice, however).

Later, Diavolo would destroy most of his body, destroying one eye and paralyzing him from the waist down. To make matters worse, he was permanently sealed into a turtle’s body, as a side effect of his own evolved Stand. Some might argue that the French suffered a fate worse than death.

7 Bertholdt (Attack on Titan)

Bertholdt was shocked, because Reiner just told Eren that they are Titans.

Bertholdt’s life has been nothing more than a sequence of tragedies. Having been born in Marley, he was forced to endure Eldian’s persecution and was ultimately selected to become the Colossal. During his foray into Paradis, he could only watch helplessly as one of his allies was devoured by a savage titan.

He spent the next several years living in fear that his “allies” would discover his identity, exacerbated after they captured (and as far as he knew, tortured) Annie. Once Reiner broke down and told the Scouts about his purpose, he was forced to defend himself, only to inevitably fail and be consumed by Armin.

6 Ban (Seven Deadly Sins)

Ban was the Fox Sin of Greed and a member of the Meliodas team. He suffered a childhood of neglect and abuse, abandoned even by his adoptive father to save his biological son.

During his attempt to obtain eternal life, he fell madly in love with Elaine, the guardian of the treasure. However, when the demons arrived, she couldn’t stop them from killing her. Ban’s failure would haunt him for years to come, and he would do anything to correct it.

5 Killua Zoldyck (Hunter X Hunter)

The future heir to Zoldyck’s legacy, the expectations placed on Killua were too much for him. His family expected him to become a murderer and would even torture him if he did not obey, a practice his two older brothers particularly liked.

He was the only person to make it to the final test of the Hunter Exam and fail on the cusp of victory. Besides, he would live with the guilt of telling Nanika that he wished she didn’t exist.

4 Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)

Midoriya’s backstory was comparatively much more difficult than that of many of his peers. Born without a father, Bakugo pestered him relentlessly for not having any quirks. This was especially painful as he tried to follow in All Might’s footsteps and idolized him.

Even after receiving the power of One For All, he would experience unspeakable suffering when using it. Any part of the body that he channeled his strength into would immediately break. The abuse she underwent would leave a permanent scar on her hand and Recovery Girl predicted an even more dire fate if she didn’t learn to be responsible with her quirk.

3 Seras Victoria (Hellsing)

Seras Victoria had a traumatic childhood, experienced unspeakable horror and powerless to protect her mother from being killed. Her past forced her to become a cop, only to face an even bleaker future.

With her comrades shattered and on the brink of death, Alucard turned her into a vampire to stay alive. As categorically as he tried to reject his new condition, he would eventually give in to his whims, becoming the very thing he had hoped to avoid.

two Yoshikage Kira (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

While Yoshikage Kira’s fate may have been justified, it was only because of his dire luck. He would never have been caught if Shigechi hadn’t accidentally mistaken his lunch for the serial killer’s.

Having narrowly escaped Josuke and his allies, he assumed the identity of a man whose son was, sadly, intelligent and inquisitive. Hayato would collaborate with his pursuers, inevitably plotting Kira’s disappearance. After his death, he would be drawn into a realm of ineffable darkness; there would be no rest for him after all the lives he had claimed.

1 Kimblee (Fullmetal alchemist)

Like Kira, Kimblee’s fate was justified due to her malice. However, the series of misfortunes in his life cannot be denied.

After being secretly exonerated by Bradley for his war crimes, Scar immediately hunted him down and narrowly avoided a heinous death. He would escape into the hands of Pride, who would consume him for sustenance in his battle against Alphonse Elric and the other heroes. This would later turn out to be the homunculus’s undoing as Kimblee had distracted him during his final fight against Edward.
