James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy movies are full of inspired casting options, the chubby kind of Parks and Recreation playing the role of the main hero, to Vin Diesel only saying a single sentence as Groot. Gunn was recently asked by a fan on Twitter, “What is the decision you had to fight tooth and nail for in a movie? As if you look back, you still wonder why the studio fought so hard against it.” , to which Gunn responded by naming the cast of Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer.
“I’d say casting @DaveBautista in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. The first thing Kevin Feige told me after seeing the first cut is that he was right about him.”
Before Guardians he left, Dave Bautista was best known for the years he spent wrestling in WWE, and occasionally appearing as the villain in minor projects like Stole Y The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption. So it’s understandable that MCU executives are skeptical of casting the former wrestler in a prominent supporting role in a big-budget movie.
But Gunn’s instincts proved to be correct. Bautista took Drax’s ultra-serious role and managed to turn it into something truly memorable, displaying an unexpectedly honed sense of comic timing that belied his burly physique.
Since playing Drax, Bautista has seen his star rise steadily in Hollywood, landing roles more interesting and varied than “hired muscle.” In turn, he has shown that he has what it takes to be a serious actor. When Chance the Rapper recently posted on Twitter wondering how Bautista is capable of acting so well, James Gunn he was happy to step in and explain the actor’s process.
“Bc @DaveBautista takes the craft seriously. It’s based on real emotion and not flashy. The difference between Dave and a lot of wrestler-actors is that when you look him in the eye on set, he’s in the place he’s supposed to. it should be, without thinking about what it is. I’m going to do next. One of the things that I deal with a lot with actors who have been part of other performing arts (ie wrestling or comedy) is to achieve STOP HUGGING and JUST BE. It’s not his job to entertain us – it’s simply your job to be present in the moment in front of you and treat it honestly. I never had to teach that to @DaveBautista. His rawness sets him apart from the first moment he I met him. It was just a matter of creating a space where he could come and share himself with all of us. “
Clearly, there is great respect between Gunn and Bautista, who are sure to make their next collaboration in the next and possibly final. Guardians film a memorable adventure for fans. Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to begin filming in 2021. Its current release date is slated for 2023.
