Silver Surfer caused Knull, the King in Black’s first fight with an opponent who appears in an MCU movie centuries before the god invaded Earth.

Long before Knull, the king in black, came to engulf Earth in living darkness, a major MCU antagonist teamed up with Silver surfer to fight the King of the Void. If facing an entire planet didn’t seem to affect Knull, it’s because he has some experience in the area.

Knull’s threat has caught the attention of almost every hero on Earth. King in black features the collective efforts of the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and everyone else, fighting to defeat the God of Symbiotes and free Earth from his grasp. Knull existed before the creation of the current universe and has remained behind Marvel history throughout the centuries. In addition to creating the symbiote species that produced Venom and Carnage, the Necrosword All-Black, the weapon with which Gorr the Butcher-God plagued Thor, came from Knull. Even further back in time, some Marvel characters had their first direct conflict with Knull.

Billions of years before Knull’s land invasion, Silver Surfer and Ego the Living Planet rallied against the dark god. After being thrown into the abyss of a black hole in Donny Cates, Tradd Moore and Dave Stewart Silver Surfer: Black, the former Herald of Galactus found himself generations in the past and in knull’s kingdom gate. The surfer only escaped the ensuing battle with the help of Ego the Living Planet, a character seen in the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, played by Kurt Russell. The version of Ego the Surfer is on a young planet who recognizes the danger Knull poses, even billions of years before the Avengers existed.

After helping the Silver Surfer escape and give him space to heal, Ego provides the weary Surfer with the ability to harness the living energy of the cosmos. With the help of Ego, the Sentinel of the Spaceways managed to defeat Knull, banishing him to the depths. But the real weapon the Surfer received from Ego was the galactic seeds that the dying hero used to sow life into the desert worlds, including his home world, Zenn-La. The actions of Silver Surfer and Ego not only defended themselves against Knull, but also resulted in the creation of life on countless worlds.

While Ego wasn’t a hero in his live-action adaptation, here he is a clear guardian of the galaxy for his role in the search for the Silver Surfer. As the Marvel heroes take on the King in black, it is important to remember that Knull might have been even more dangerous, were it not for the heroic pasts of Silver surfer and Ego, the living planet.
