The intense trailer for the R-rated Mortal Kombat reboot reveals an impressive and massive change in one of the series’ nastiest villains.

The first R-rated trailer Mortal Kombat reboot provided a glimpse of many of the franchise’s heroes in action. Video game fans were overjoyed to see Liu Kang, Scorpion, Raiden, Jax, Kung Lao, and Sonya Blade ready to wage war in the tournament and prevent Shang Tsung’s forces from invading Earth. However, while villains like Mileena, Reptile, Kabal, Sub-Zero, and Goro are on display in the middle of things, it’s worth noting that the movie makes a massive change to one of the nastiest demons in the game: Kano.

The trailer sees Kano training with Raiden and fighting alongside the heroes. In fact, in the end, he even punches Reptile’s chest and pops out his heart for his signature Fatality, indicating that he wants to save the planet. It’s a weird change, because Kano is usually one of the most despicable characters, often trying to kill Sonya and her Special Forces team, including Jax.

Kano has never allied himself with them, as he has always sought maximum power by working with Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn, even obtaining weapon upgrades for his soldiers. However, fans are already weighing theories on why he would make a change, with some pointing out that it could be a negotiated deal a la Suicide Team. Sonya has seen him hitting him in the desert, so maybe she forced him to partner, or convinced him to help save Earth because the business would be bad for the Black Dragon if he got hold of him, or worse, if he destroyed him.

He has even been seen testing his cybernetic eye in the trailer, firing lasers with Kung Lao deflecting it with his hat. This may be part of your training, but other fans think it could be a heel twist. They believe that Kano might switch sides if an offer comes from the ever-changing Shang Tsung, or that he might have been a spy the entire time. In fact, some posit that when he turns around, he will lose his eye on Jax based on the source material and then be upgraded by Shang Tsung to hunt down the heroes.

It is true that this is all speculation, as there are many things that the trailer does not show. But since Kano is cursing at the end after the heart-tearing and general disposition, it doesn’t seem like he’s a permanent hero. That said, if you stay on the heroic side, you will subvert expectations a bit.

Fans will likely want to see him participate in his entire rivalry with Sonya, and maybe one day go after Johnny Cage, but as it stands, Kano is on Team Raiden for now.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film hits theaters and at HBO Max on April 16.
