Rachel McAdams to star in an adaptation of Are you there, God? It’s me, margaret. Released in 1970, by author Judy Blume, the young adult novel focused on a sixth-grade girl named Margaret. Growing up without a religious affiliation, due to his parents’ interfaith marriage, the character seeks only one religion while also having to deal with puberty and being in love with certain children. Although the book has developed a legacy over the decades, with its title frequently referenced in pop culture, an adaptation of it never made it to the big screen.

That may change soon, as Collider reports McAdams will star in a film version of Are you there, God? It’s me, margaret. McAdams, known for memorable performances in films such as Bad Girls Y Game night, in addition to receiving an Oscar nomination for his role in Stand out, will play Margaret’s mother. Abby Ryder Fortson, who appeared as young Cassie Lang in Ant Man and its 2018 sequel, she will play Margaret. Almost seventeen director Kelly Fremon Craig will write and direct the adaptation.

The project will be produced by Fremon and Blume, alongside Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai, Amy Brooks, and James L. Brooks. Scheduled to begin production in April, the Lionsgate film marks the first time the seminal novel will receive some form of adaptation.

Blume has been reluctant to tell the story through another medium, arguing that each reader brings their own point of view to the novel. But hopefully with the involvement of Blume, as well as the talent in front of and behind the camera, Are you there, God? It’s me, margaret will resonate with moviegoers.
