Fans of The Legend of Zelda have been celebrating the 35th anniversary of the original game’s release on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986.
Today marks 35th anniversary of The legend of ZeldaThe launch of the Famicom in Japan and fans all over Twitter are celebrating. Link’s first adventure came to the United States when it was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. Since then, the game has been adapted to various Nintendo consoles and handheld devices over time and there have been 18 sequels. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the newest main game in the series, due out for Wii U and Nintendo Switch in 2017.
Aside from the main entries in the series, there have been several spin-off titles and adaptations of the series. More recent, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a derivative of Koei Tecmo’s Warrior dynasty franchise and prequel to Breath of the wild faced Link and the Champions of Hyrule in a battle against 1000 against the forces of Calamity Ganon. In a Nintendo Direct that took place on February 17, Zelda series producer Eiji Aounuma announced a 2011 HD remaster. Sword to the sky for the switch. Aounuma also promised that there would be more information about the Breath of the wild sequel later this year.
Cosplayers, visual artists, and fans of all stripes have been tweeting about The legend of Zelda to commemorate the ’35 seriesth anniversary. Twitter user Shellanin posted photos of her cosplay as Zelda from Breath of the wild, complete with his own Sheikah Slate. Emilie (kyootiwepaints) drew a poignant photo of Zelda from the original NES game meeting Zelda from Breath of the wild. Many people posted their hopes on how Nintendo is celebrating the anniversary, mostly with the games that they hope will get re-released.
People in the games industry, and even some celebrities, were also excited. Trudi Castle, lead artist on the Darkest Dungeon series, shared images he made of a younger Link traveling through a forest meeting Koroks, encountering Wisps, and encountering snowmen. These images feel like they were straight out of a storybook (which is an excellent idea if someone at Nintendo is reading). Voice actor Chris Hackney, known for his role as Dimitri in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, shared a photo of his wedding ring that has “It is dangerous to go alone” inscribed on the inside of the ring in a Hylian font. Even Zelda williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams, joked that Twitter was four years before her 35th birthday.
The legend of Zelda is a series that means a lot to gamers and to the video game industry in general. Many fans were disappointed that no more Zelda news was shown in last week’s Nintendo Direct, so it’s good to see the attitude around the series change online. Fans shouldn’t lose hope for more Zelda this year. Last year it was Mario’s 35th anniversary and Nintendo didn’t really start celebrating until September, so there’s plenty of time for more Zelda goodness.
