In the new Mortal Kombat trailer, Sub-Zero showcased a lot of moves, including a new blood dagger finisher that isn’t in the games.

The trailer for the next Mortal Kombat The movie had no impact, showing a new Sub-Zero blood dagger finishing move. The 2021 film will be the third live-action film based on the fighting game series that began nearly thirty years ago. It seems that the film will not only try to be a faithful adaptation of the games, but will also try to capture the extreme violence characteristic of the series in new and exciting ways.

Video games became famous in the early 1990s for featuring large amounts of blood and graphic depictions of death and violence. While the original Mortal KombatThe deaths are relatively moderate by today’s standards, there have rarely been such violent games before and it caused such public outrage that it eventually led to the creation of the ESRB rating system. Since then, games have continued to up the ante because of how ridiculously violent each new entry could be. However, the film adaptations of the 90s, Mortal Kombat Y Mortal Kombat: Annihilation Both were rated PG-13 and therefore failed to adequately capture the violence of the games. The best example of this is with Sub-Zero, an iconic character from the series. Much of the new trailer showcases the awesome ice powers of the ninja assassin and lays out some of the ways he will use them in action pieces from the film. the Mortal Kombat The trailer begins with him freezing Jax’s arms and smashing them into bloody pieces, which is a classic technique of his from video games. What’s not in the games, however, is his new blood dagger finisher that he’s seen using against his longtime rival, Scorpion.

This move involves Sub-Zero slashing at his opponent with an ice sword, causing blood to shoot up into the air, and then freezing that blood into a dagger, trapping it, and finally stabbing it into his opponent’s body. It’s twisted, creative, and a bit goofy, so it feels like something that could have been straight out of the games, but is actually a creation for the movie. In all the history of Mortal Kombat, none of Sub-Zero’s kills used an attack like this, and it is not a known part of his move set. It is a completely new finisher that is in line with Sub-Zero as a character and fighter.

This is a good sign for the film, as it shows that the filmmakers involved understand the core appeal of Mortal Kombat. At the same time, they can bring new things to the table while expanding on what’s already in the source material to make what could end up being one of the best video game movies in recent years.
