While this interaction put Shadow in a difficult position with Laura requesting information on Mr. Wednesday in order to kill him, this was not the only ghost that haunts Shadow in Season 3, Episode 6, “Consciousness of the King”.

Shadow has begun to develop feelings for his Lakeside neighbor, Marguerite Olsen, even though they got off to a more than difficult start. Sam was first featured in Season 2, Episode 3, “Munin”. After taking $ 20 from a gas clerk, Sam still took Shadow to Mr. Ibis’s funeral home. They weren’t on bad terms; However, with Shadow on the run from the law, seeing a familiar and unexpected face on Lakeside is risky to say the least. He’s going for Mike here, not Shadow, and he’s built a whole new backstory to stay under the radar, so Sam could easily blow his cover.

Fortunately, Sam quickly picks up on it and plays along with Shadow’s charade as Mike. Dinner seems to be going wonderfully, and Shadow even takes Sam to the car, where he admits that he had a good feeling about Shadow and knew they had met again. While he is friendly with Shadow, he also warns him not to hurt his sister.

While Shadow is able to keep his past a secret, Sam reveals more about Marguerite’s backstory, talking about how her oldest son, Sandy, disappeared into thin air. While Marguerite hopes he’s in Florida, Sam doubts it. The two were like twins and she knows he would have responded to her messages if he were in Florida.

Twice in one episode, Shadow’s cover could have been revealed by Laura or Sam, and he’s lucky both women played along, keeping it in Marguerite’s good will. However, with tensions still high between the Old and New Gods, Shadow better be careful, especially now that he’s making human connections in the small town of Lakeside.

Based on the Neil gaiman novel of the same name, stars of American Gods Ricky whittleEmily Browning Bruce Langley, Yetide Badaki, Ian McShane, Omid Abtahi and Ashley Reyes. The series airs Sundays at 8:00 pm ET / PT on Starz.
