It has been almost seven years since Mrs. Edna Krabappel, Bart’s long-suffering fourth grade teacher, made her last appearance on The Simpsons then Marcia wallace passed away suddenly in October 2013. The veteran television star and comedian provided the voice of Ms. Krabappel for 25 seasons, winning an Emmy for her work in 1992. But Simpsons fans, and Bart himself, got a chance to say one last goodbye to the character in last night’s episode “Diary Queen,” in which Bart discovers Mrs. Krabappel’s old diary.

As reported by VarietyWallace’s appearance, which was officially credited and authorized by his estate, was accomplished using two lines of dialogue that he had recorded for previous episodes. Executive Producer Al Jean explained the decision to bring Ms. Krabappel back after nearly a decade:

“Unfortunately, it was a very surprising step. I didn’t know I was that sick until very close to when it happened. So we never got a chance to properly say goodbye to her on the show, and this is a small attempt to do so. And, you know, everyone who worked on The Simpsons loved her so much, we wanted to give her one last moment on the show in her memory. It’s just that, it’s nothing more, but we thought she was the best. ”

Jean also stated that while The Simpsons acknowledges the death of Ms Krabappel, the show will never explain exactly what happened to her. “I don’t think people these days necessarily want to know how a character died,” he said. “But we reveal a little more about [Mrs. Krabappel] and then a little more about her life and how the character felt when she passed away. “Finally, he clarifies that this will be Ms. Krabappel’s last appearance, saying,” We just wanted to fire the character correctly, in a way that I don’t think. he’s trying to be exploitative. “You can watch a clip from the episode below, which includes some of Wallace’s repurposed dialogue.
