In Future State: Justice League, the backup story for Justice League Dark has cast supernatural heroes to the wolves. In a future where Merlin has torn the world apart, the team is in a state of turmoil with hardly anyone left to fight back. Zatanna, Constantine, Ragman, and Detective Chimp / Etrigan are the only heroes left, but thankfully, they have been fueled by the return of their most powerful hero, Khalid Nassour / Dr. Destiny.

And when the team’s adventures in Future State come to an end, Fate makes a big move by borrowing some of Dr. Strange’s best moves from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to save her friends and this particular reality.

In Las Vegas, the Justice League Dark team is getting beaten up by Enchantress, one of Merlin’s key knights. Fortunately, Etrigan eventually broke their pact and began attacking enemies, as he believes Merlin extracted and killed Jason Blood. However, it turns out that Jason is also a knight, impales the demon and prepares to behead him.

It’s a disappointing ending as Zatanna’s team really fought hard, but they’re dominated. But just as Jason lowers his sword, Fate jumps up, blocks it, and performs a direct move from Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme. He wants to negotiate with Merlin, who is the ace up his sleeve Strange used to trap Dormammu in a time loop in 2016. Strange doctor. Except here, Fate’s plan is a bit simpler.

Khalid knows that Merlin wants the helmet to see the future, but Merlin cannot control it as he was not chosen. Therefore, Khalid offers to be his oracle, taking advantage of clairvoyance and guiding the magician, hopefully, towards a better and peaceful life. Merlin accepts the idea since it is something he always wanted, to call his troops and return through a rift.

As Etrigan and the dark team mourn Khalid’s fate, he is glad that he is giving his life for theirs, and it is because he has seen multiple futures. He even tells Etrigan that he can help prevent this world from being fulfilled by influencing his modern self. When he visited Nabu’s lair months before, Hauhet, another god, showed him all the possible futures he could think of and this informed all of his actions thus far. That is why he hid and then came out as it was all part of his plan.

While victory doesn’t seem possible in this timeline, Fate can at least save her colleagues and urge Etrigan to prevent it from happening in the first place. It is similar to Strange using the Time Stone to see millions of possibilities before making a sacrifice that would also take his life. That was the only way to put the heroes on the road to victory, and Khalid follows the same methodology here, except this time he has resigned himself to being Merlin’s lackey to keep his friends alive in a world that already they have lost in the magical darkness.
