Due to the state’s vigilance in handling COVID-19, the state could begin to reopen in phases. The entertainment venues were considered part of Phase 4, and many have not yet been able to reopen to this date.
Other states have had more flexible policies regarding theaters. Some states only required that movie theaters be closed for one month of the full duration of the coronavirus pandemic. Other states, including New York, implemented movie theaters during the warmer months. However, movie theaters still suffered as larger cities like New York and Los Angeles have kept theaters closed. For Variety, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that theaters could soon begin to reopen in New York City. The process of reopening the cinemas will begin on Friday, March 5. Movie theaters will be operating at 25% capacity, which is on par with the rest of the current New York State and Long Island movie theater regulations. Also, no more than 50 people will be allowed per screening. Theaters are expected to adopt COVID-19 protocols as assigned seating. However, Governor Cuomo has allowed some leniency. No on-site testing will be required, and movie theater employees will not be added to the current pool of people eligible for the vaccine.
New York City is the second largest location in the United States film industry. The film industry has been suffering immensely without the help of New York and Los Angeles. Theaters have received some relief and have made compromising deals with streaming platforms like HBO Max. However, these have not been enough to completely soften the blow of the coronavirus pandemic in theaters. The opening up of the New York film industry is sure to get movie theaters back on the right track.
While safety has been the number one priority during the coronavirus pandemic, now is the opportune time for New York to reopen theaters. Sports have been able to continue with restrictions with the arts sitting watching with hands tied. It’s refreshing to see movie theaters and live theater performances finally getting attention during these times. Still, medical expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has said that movie theaters would not be safe again for a year after the vaccine came out, so New York is ahead of the curve in that regard. New York movie fans, rest assured when it’s time to return to theaters on March 5.
