WandaVision episode 7, “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” suggests that the MCU is officially reprising Scarlet Witch, as a sorceress, not a mutant.
WandaVision she’s reconfiguring Scarlet Witch’s powers, but as a sorceress, not as a mutant. When Scarlet Witch was first introduced to the MCU, she was portrayed as a “miracle. “Wanda and her brother Quicksilver were the only test subjects to survive Hydra’s experiments with the Mind Stone. But it has been clear for a long time that Marvel planned to regain Scarlet Witch’s powers in some way; for years, Marvel figures have openly discussed the idea of redefining their power set.
The only question has been whether Scarlet Witch would be reconsidered as a mutant or a sorceress. There is comic book precedent for any approach; Wanda was considered a mutant for much of her comic book history, but all of that changed as a result of 2014. AXIS history. There, a magic spell revealed that there was actually no blood bond between Wanda and Magneto, and that their previous history was actually a hoax. Rather than being considered a mutant, modern comics see Scarlet Witch as a sorceress. Marvel actually seems to be doubling down on this decision; she is despised by the modern mutant community, seen almost as a diabolical figure. So no one knew if Marvel Studios would consider Scarlet Witch a mutant or a mystic.

That question finally seems to have been answered in WandaVision Episode 7. This episode revealed that Scarlet Witch has been tapping into some kind of mystical “nexus” that allows her to rewrite the nature of reality itself. However, she is not the only one capable of using the power of the nexus; Episode 7 also confirmed longstanding fan theories that Agnes’s character is actually the dark witch Agatha Harkness. Importantly, when Agatha introduced herself to Wanda, she mocked her asking if she really thought she was the only one. “magic user“in the city. This seems to confirm once and for all that Marvel is taking Scarlet Witch back not as a mutant, but as a sorceress.
This approach actually fits with Kevin Feige’s comments on Scarlet Witch’s 2016 comeback. While promoting Strange doctor, Feige also made a throwaway comment about Wanda’s powers. “His powers, he never had any training“I observe,”I’m talking about Scarlet Witch. She never had any training; she is finding out. Arguably that’s why his powers are so much more chaotic and so much looser in the way we display those light effects. In [Doctor Strange], some of what you can see today, even the cover of Entertainment Weekly, is much tighter. It’s about concentrating. It’s about drawing energies from other dimensions in an organized and purposeful way, so they can do much more than she can do, at least in a much more precise way.“It seems like Marvel’s plans for Scarlet Witch haven’t changed.
Of course, it is possible that Marvel will choose what could be called a “double retcon”, revealing Wanda as a mutant. Y a sorceress. However, this is unlikely; While the comics themselves are full of retcons, this is the result of different creative teams throughout the decades. It’s hard to believe that Marvel Studios, which benefits from Kevin Feige’s singular vision, will ever choose to enjoy retcons to the same degree as the comics. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, one answer is unfortunate; two seems careless. And so, it seems that the die is cast; The MCU is officially reprising Scarlet Witch as a sorceress in WandaVision, not as a mutant.
