James Gunn apparently confirms that the adult fan version of Groot they saw in Guardians of the Galaxy will not return in the third film.
Groot grown from the start Guardians of the Galaxy The movie will not return, confirmed James Gunn. As underdogs of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, no one expected the Guardians, a team of ragged misfits, to have such a profound effect on audiences. The most popular of these misfits has been Rocket Raccoon’s upright bipedal bodyguard and tree, Groot. Groot captured people’s hearts with his seemingly innocent nature and limited vocabulary. After pronouncing “we are grootAnd sacrificing himself to save his fellow Guardians, fans were saddened by the death of a character they had just met and loved.

After the Battle of Xandar, Rocket used part of Groot’s destroyed body to plant a new Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured the dancing boy known as Baby Groot (a pop culture phenomenon that possibly fueled a babyfication trend). Many thought that Baby Groot was born through reincarnation, undermining and making the disappearance of the original easier to accept. For Avengers: Infinity WarBaby Groot had grown into a pubescent teenager, leading to the assumption that this version of Groot would grow into an adult Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That being said, Gunn has since made it clear (multiple times) that this Groot and the original are different characters. Still, fans have wondered if the adult Groot they fell in love with nearly seven years ago would ever return.
Gunn recently hosted another question and answer session on Instagram. A fan asked when and if we could see Groot’s adult form again to which Gunn replied, “Sadly, that original Groot is no longer with us. So unless there’s a prequel of some kind, we won’t see it again.“Check out his story commentary below.
At this point, the fact that the original Groot is dead should come as no surprise. However, since the question pertains to Groot’s adult form and not necessarily the different characters, it is unclear whether Gunn is just dodging spoilers or hinting that the adult form we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy I’m not actually going back. Groot’s voice actor, Vin Diesel, once said that we have yet to see adult Groot within the MCU: Guardians of the GalaxyGroot iteration “I was a freshman in collegeWhile Baby Groot is in nursery school. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to take place after Avengers Endgame Y Thor: love and thunder – regardless of the blip, Groot will be be older.
Diesel has referred to the Groot that we will see below as “Big alpha. “Given everything that’s happened, the next time we see Groot he’s probably going to be bigger, tougher, and wiser than ever. Not only does he keep things fresh (a different live version of Groot in basically every movie) but he doesn’t undermines the death of the original Groot; if we never see him again, not even a likeness, then his sacrifice retains its purpose and seriousness. This does not mean that we will not see Guardians of the Galaxy‘Groot adult in a spin-off with Rocket or something similar to Disney + I am groot. Regardless, with principal photography starting later this year, we can expect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Groot’s version, one that presumably pays homage to the iterations that preceded it.
