The Sex and the City revival progresses without Samantha and Mr. Big. Here’s why the show can’t function without these key characters.

HBO Max’s Sex and the city revival can’t work without Samantha “Sam” Jones (played by Kim Cattrall) and John James “Mr. Big” Preston (played by Chris Noth). In January 2021, Variety confirmed that the revival will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, titled “And So …” and will bring back three of the show’s central characters: Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon). The hit show aired on HBO between 1998 and 2004 and followed four women as they navigated their dates, careers and friendships in New York City. The film spawned two feature films and a prequel, Carrie’s diaries. Excitement for revival has been overshadowed by the question of whether moving on without Samantha is a mistake.

The announcement of the revival, which is scheduled to begin production this spring, has sparked a slew of buzz, most of it surrounding the absence of Kim Cattrall. Cattrall has spoken in the press and on social media over the years about her controversial behind-the-scenes relationship with the other women, particularly Parker. In a 2019 interview with the Daily mail, Cattrall said that she “never” make another Sex and the city movie, apparently ending the franchise. While fans continue to speculate how the revival will address Samantha’s absence (including Samantha’s possible death), it recently emerged that Noth will not be reprising her role, Carrie’s love interest turned husband in the upcoming series (Noth did not confirm. or denied participation.)

Samantha, by far the most sex positive of the top four, put much of the “sex” into Sex and the city. Most importantly, the show emphasized the importance of lasting female friendships. Even if Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha didn’t always agree with each other’s life decisions, they supported and loved each other unconditionally. The show featured a rarely-seen representation of women who weren’t jealous, combative, or competing for male attention. If a track released by HBO Max’s chief content officer Casey Bloys is any indicator of how the revival will deal with Samantha no longer being a part of the group, that’s about to change. Bloys said TVLine, “Friendships fade and new friendships begin … They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a 50-year-old woman in New York. So everything should feel kind of organic, and the friends you have when you’re 30 may not. have it when I’m 50 “. This is a sea change for women who proclaimed themselves “soul mates.”

It’s not just friendships that will fade. Noth’s Mr. Big could also be missing on the reboot. This introduces additional complications to the plot that may not be to the liking of fans. Only secondary to the main core friendships was Carrie’s intermittent romance with the charismatic Mr. Big. Although the couple overcame marital fights in Sex and the City 2, your relationship is now surely doomed. In a 2018 episode of his origins podcast, journalist James Andrew Miller revealed the script for the canceled Sex and the city 3 revolved around a widowed Carrie (Mr. Big died of a heart attack in the shower). It’s a logical but grim assumption that the revival will resurrect history. None of Carrie’s other love interests fell short of Big, proving that Noth’s shoes are hard to fill. The original series and the first movie showed Carrie mourning the loss of this relationship, so do fans need to see her do it again?

While Sex and the city Tackled a more substantial issue amid the hilarious sexual exploits of women, the revival seems to be heading down a darker path paved by the absence of two key characters. The show’s legacy has been marred by off-screen fights and underwhelming movies. The series finale gave the main characters satisfying endings to their respective stories, making the revival feel like a vain project. In January, Parker posted a series preview about her. Instagram has the legend, “I couldn’t help but wonder … where are they now?” Without Cattrall and Noth returning for revival, it is tempting to answer “Who cares?”
