The Harry Potter houses and the Star Wars Jedi Initiate Clans show that the two groups have more in common than you imagined.

At the beginning of each school year, new Hogwarts students put the Sorting Hat on their heads and are assigned to one of four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin. But it may come as a surprise to hear that the Jedi classify their new members into distinct groups as well, showing Star Wars Y Harry Potter they have more in common than the chosen ones.

Appearing for the first time in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones With the Bear Clan, the Jedi Initiate clans are groups of young men who live, learn, and train together during their early years in the Jedi Temple. As in the houses of Hogwarts, the clans of Jedi Initiates are a family of young people who grow up in the temple. However, unlike Hogwarts, the Jedi don’t get a fancy song from a magic hat to classify them. Instead, the Star Wars Legends reference book The Jedi Way: A Manual for Students of the Force explains that the adoptives who ran the Jedi nurseries placed Initiates in the clan that best suited their traits. While the new canon has not explained how exactly youth are classified into clans, it is safe to assume that youth are still assigned to clans when they first arrive at the temple.

As for your options, there are more than four clans of Jedi Initiates that one could be classified into, making the Star Wars slightly more complex version than Harry Potter‘s. While not all clan names of Jedi Initiates are known, quite a few have been mentioned in canon, including the Bear Clan, that Master Yoda was training when Obi-Wan came to search for the lost planet of Kamino on Attack of the clones; the Heliost, Thranta and Hawkbat clans, which were introduced in Claudia Gray’s canon novel Dooku: Lost Jedi. Count Dooku and his childhood best friend, Sifo-Diyas, grew up together in the Hawkbat Clan, while the former’s Padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn, came from the Heliost Clan.

The clans of Jedi Initiates served as the first and only true foundation of the “family” that the Jedi had due to the prohibitive bond of the Jedi Code. Similarly, Hogwarts houses serve as the students’ family during their time at Hogwarts. Lifelong bonds can be formed between members of their respective Jedi clans or Hogwarts houses and remain even years after they are gone. Best friends Dooku and Sifo-Diyas are a clear example of this in Star Warswhile the famous Potter trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione remained together after leaving Hogwarts.

Group training and activities were an important part of life in both Jedi Initiate clans and Hogwarts. Like the Hogwarts teachers, Jedi Masters would instruct clans in the ways of the Jedi and basic lightsaber combat. Jedi clans normally held dueling tournaments to showcase the abilities of the Initiates to potential masters. Hogwarts Quidditch matches, though more for sport than training, brought the Hogwarts houses together in similar competition with each other. Jedi and wizards alike had to train and grow together properly in order to compete and possibly win tournaments, and Initiates who proved talented won the favor of potential masters looking to take on a Padawan. The Hogwarts Quidditch players who won the Quidditch Cup, by comparison, brought glory to their home and could potentially play the sport professionally after Hogwarts.

The Gathering on Illum with Master Yoda

There is also the matter of their weapons: lightsabers and wands. In Star Wars, Clone Wars Season 5, Episode 6, “The Gathering”, Ahsoka Tano and Master Yoda lead a clan of nameless hatchlings to the planet Illum. Ahsoka explains that the clan is ready to participate in “The Gathering,” a Jedi ritual where young people claim their lightsaber crystals. When the members of a clan reach a certain age, they travel to the sacred planet of Illum to participate in the ritual. The way a young Jedi attaches to his lightsaber crystal is even similar to how wizards in Harry Potter they are chosen by their wands. No two wands or two lightsabers are the same.

And just as the Hogwarts students finally graduate and go beyond school, the young Jedi leave their clans to become Padawans. Once a young Jedi became a Padawan under the tutelage of a Jedi Knight or Master, they were no longer under the jurisdiction of their clan or their teachers. The Hogwarts students faced something similar as they grew up and took their sixth year EXTASIS classes. Unlike in previous years, NEWT’s class attendance was based on the previous year’s OWL test results. In this way, Jedi Initiates and Hogwarts students move away from their original families to learn more advanced knowledge and become full-fledged adults on their respective worlds.

The Jedi Initiate clans and Hogwarts houses serve as the base for their respective members. Everything a Jedi or wizard learns in the future comes from their house or clan, and the friendships they make and the mentors they learn from are determined by where they are classified. This is just one of the many similarities that wizards and Jedi share, so even galaxies apart, Harry Potter Y Star Wars they have a surprising amount in common.
