Ta-Nehisi Coates and JJ Abrams are preparing a Superman movie reboot. What does that mean for Henry Cavill’s future DCEU as the Man of Steel?
Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and producer JJ Abrams are developing a new Superman reboot of the movie, which casts more doubt on Henry Cavill’s future as the DCEU’s Man of Steel. Cavill made his debut as Superman in 2013. Iron ManBut his tenure in the blue and red suit didn’t quite go according to plan. Iron Man In itself it was somewhat divisive for his darker and murderous Zod portrayal of the character, but that was nothing compared to the negative commercial and critical responses to his next two outings. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Y League of Justice. Cavill has not appeared since, although Superman did make a headless cameo in Shazam! – and there have been several reports in recent years about its future, which remains uncertain at best.

While Cavill’s path ahead is unclear, there are plans for Superman (and indeed for his family in general). Following the announcement that Supergirl would appear in The flash film, it was reported on February 26, 2021 that Warner Bros. is developing a new Superman movie, with JJ Abrams serving as producer and Ta-Nehisi Coates writing the script. With this being a reboot, that means it’s at least a different take than Cavill’s, but what does that mean for his future, and could he eventually return to the role one day?
At first glance, the fact that a Superman reboot is in the works isn’t good news for those hoping to see Cavill’s return. While it’s still early days, this news, combined with the plans for Supergirl, shows that WB’s priorities for the Big Blue Boy Scout clearly lie elsewhere, and that makes sense. The future of the DC movie is more focused on standalone storylines than the heavier shared-universe approach that the DCEU originally ran, and that’s easier to do with iterations of characters that have no ties to that past. This is why Robert Pattinson is the main future of DC’s Batman, so logic suggests that the same applies to Superman now, especially given that they are the two characters in which DC has arguably had the most trouble in terms of response. .
While the reports have been murky, Cavill has said that he hopes to play Superman again, saying so in June 2020, though he has since held his cards closer to his chest. While he has been talked about making a cameo in a future film, there are no plans for a true Superman appearance or Man of Steel 2, but will reprise its role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. That is expected to do more justice to Superman, developing his character arc in a way that the 2017 film, which was re-filmed, failed to do, complete with Superman in his black suit. That’s generating more buzz for the character, but it still seems like a long shot that another Cavill-directed Superman movie will be lit green, especially now that the focus is elsewhere.
However, the Superman reboot isn’t all bad news for Cavill. The future of DC movies is exploring the multiverse, with The flash with multiple Batman actors. The new Superman has been reported to be Black, and it’s unclear if that means he’ll still be Clark Kent or another DC character, like Calvin Ellis. Regardless of ethnicity, character name, and anything else, since the new Superman will be a different version, rather than a recast of Cavill, there is room for the two to coexist side by side. That means there would be scope for Cavill to return at some point without interfering with the reboot, and perhaps even, as Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s Batmen, for them to appear in the same movie.
With Cavill having many other commitments, including The WizardSo it’s unlikely anything will happen anytime soon, but for those hoping for the return of Cavill’s Superman, the door doesn’t seem to be firmly closed yet, especially given that the Snyder Cut is happening after so many years of hesitation. But whether Cavill returns or not, with the promise of a Black Superman From a talented creative team, the future of the Man of Steel is at least exciting and tangible once again.
