Klaus had a habit of keeping Ben’s presence as a ghost a secret from his brothers at The Umbrella Academy, and there are a few reasons why.
Klaus (Robert Sheehan) was the first member of the Hargreeves brothers with the power to see and communicate with Ben (Justin H. Min) in The Umbrella Academybut he doesn’t like to share that fact with his family. Also known as “Number Four”, Klaus is one of the children adopted by Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) who he raised to form a group of superpowers to stop crime. He and Ben were born in unique circumstances on October 1, 1989, along with their adoptive brothers Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Vanya (Elliot). Page). Ben died before the brothers reached adulthood, but the character is still present in the series thanks to the powers of Klaus.

Each member of the Hargreeves brothers harbors drastically different powers. Klaus, in particular, is capable of speaking to the dead, but his gift goes much deeper than that. As a trained medium, Klaus communicates with spirits who have unfinished business in the afterlife. Of course, this power only works when Klaus is sober. Considering that they fear ghosts and interact with spirits, Klaus suppresses their mediumship with drugs and alcohol. In addition to being a medium, Klaus also has powers to conjure spirits to manifest in the real world, also known as evocation.
Klaus’ use of evocation is how he brought a version of Ben after Reginald’s funeral in The Umbrella Academy season 1. Ben died years before the events of the debut season, but Klaus manages to reunite with his brother, allowing the character to participate in the various apocalyptic threats. Although Ben often followed his brother to guide him in the right direction, Klaus did not reveal Ben’s presence to others. He either hid the truth from his brothers or lied outright, such as Klaus’ claim that Ben didn’t time travel to the 1960s. Diego and Vanya eventually got special meetings with Ben in season 2, but series creator Steve Blackman previously explained (via Reddit) why Klaus hides the fact that he can see Ben. Blackman stated Klaus “he’s selfish and knows he’s the conduit of Ben’s connection to the world“Before adding the character of Sheehan he never wanted to share his brother with others. There may also be another side to Klaus’ secret that connects with Reginald.”
How Klaus’ Secret at The Umbrella Academy Connects to Reginald
Klaus never had the intentional intention of bringing Ben back. Instead, he attempted to summon Reginald at the request of his brothers. By not doing so, the series revealed Ben’s presence, but Klaus chose to keep it to himself. He claimed that he was too tall to successfully use his spell powers, plus Reginald was too stubborn to return. Some of that might have been true, but Klaus probably didn’t want to confront his father. Each member of the Umbrella Academy had problems with Reginald based on how he dealt with them throughout his life. As the family revolts, Klaus was never interested in meeting the figure he thought ruined his life.
After a near death experience, Klaus had the opportunity to interact with Reginald in the afterlife. During the encounter, Klaus was told that he only scratched the surface with his powers. Part of Klaus’ expanded potential was explored in The Umbrella Academy season 2 with its ability to harbor spirits for longer. Still, Klaus decided not to share the true potential of his powers. You may have feared that your siblings would force you to use their abilities more often. By not fully overcoming his fear of interacting with ghosts, it made sense why Klaus still struggles to embrace his gifts. That could change now that the original Ben is gone and more of the truth has come to light.
