General Swanwick, played by Harry Lennix, appears in Iron Man Y Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Secretary of Defense of the United States. Swanwick was destined to appear in League of Justice too, but it never came to fruition. The director’s cut is an epic realization of Snyder’s broader vision for the franchise. Many of the threads to be expanded in Justice league 2 it would have been seeded in the first film, and the Snyder Cut remains true to this notion, even if audiences will never see the end of those threads. In the same way as the epics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zack Snyder’s Justice League it’s packed with interlocking plots and sweet for superhero viewing; it has five more villains than the theatrical cut.
In an interview as part of IGN Fan Fest 2021, Snyder confirmed that Martian Manhunter and General Swanwick are indeed one and the same, they are not just new characters coming to his court. The public has known for a while that General Swanwick is supposed to be revealed as Martian Manhunter, but Lennix himself asked Snyder during his interview if Martian Manhunter only appeared as Swanwick temporarily in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, or if he had been dressing up as Swanwick the whole time. Snyder confirmed the latter, definitely calling Swanwick Martian Manhunter’s “alter ego.“See Snyder’s quote below:
Swanwick and Martian Manhunter, he’s like his alter-ego, that’s how I see him. And if you notice the way he manipulated Lois and Clark to be the best they can be because, you know, in this incarnation he wants humanity to do it themselves and / or this new hero in Superman. And I think that’s how I see it, that he, you know, have the same voice.
J’onn J’onzz, better known as Martian Manhunter, is a staple of the DC universe and one of its most powerful heroes. Super strength, flight, shapeshifting, and telepathy are just a few of his alien abilities. It has appeared in cartoons, movies, live-action series, video games, and more, saving the world from terrestrial and intergalactic threats. For him, having been secretly influencing events throughout the DCEU as General Swanwick is an exciting implementation of a hero whose powers are such that he can rise to the highest level of government in disguise.
Perhaps no one is as excited about the reveal as Lennix himself, who asked the public to start a campaign to get Martian Manhunter his own movie. It’s unclear exactly where Warner Bros. wants to go with the DCEU from here. According to Snyder, they have expressed little interest in continuing their vision for the franchise, although a massive fan campaign brought with it. Zack Snyder’s Justice League to the finish line. It is quite possible that enough interest shown can help make a solo Martian Manhunter movie.
