Veteran director Gore verbinski (pirates of the Caribbean) is associated with original Utopia creator Dennis Kelly in an adaptation of characteristics of George RR MartinThe 1979 novel Sandkings currently in the works on Netflix, Collider has learned exclusively.
Verbinski revealed the exciting news in a recent interview with Collider, during which he discussed his past films and the high-profile projects he never did.
After being asked what he is currently working on, Verbinski said that “one of the scripts is based on a short story by George RR Martin called Sandkings, which is a brilliant little twisted short story that I love. And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]… The British original series is brilliant. And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I’m a little excited about that, “said Verbinski, who declined to say more about the project, although we did manage to find out a bit more.
It seems that John baldecchi, who produced the Verbinski feature film in 2001 The Mexican, Will produce Sandkings under your Digital Riot Media banner based on your company’s website. Although I have never read the book, it sounds amazing, so I will do my best to explain the plot without revealing anything.
The story follows a rich playboy named Simon Kress who collects exotic and dangerous animals. One day, he stumbles upon a mysterious establishment called Wo & Shade, where he buys a terrarium filled with four colonies of creatures called kings of the sand, which grow to fill whatever environment they are in. Each colony consists of a large female called the maw, and numerous insect-like mobiles that she controls through telepathy. In addition to finding food for the jaws, mobiles also build a sand castle around themselves to protect the jaws from invading colonies.
In fact, the four colonies (white, black, red, and orange) often engage in coordinated wars with each other, especially once their new owner forces them to fight for food by starving them to death. Simon begins to place bets on the outcome of these wars, leaving some of his friends impressed and others disgusted. Eventually, the Sand Kings escape Simon’s terrarium and begin to take over his home as his hunger, and Simon’s despair, intensifies.
First published in the August 1979 issue of the science fiction magazine Omni, Sandkings it remains the only one of Martin’s stories to have won the Hugo and Nebula awards. The author originally intended to Sandkings to be part of a series, but that idea never came to fruition, although the story takes place in the same fictional “Thousand Worlds” universe as several of Martin’s other works, including Night fliers.

Sandkings was previously adapted in 1995 as a television movie starring Beau bridges which eventually served as the first episode of The outer limits relaunch, and was also made into a graphic novel in 1987 by DC Comics, the writer Doug moench and artists Pat broderick Y Neal McPheeters.
Kelly comes from HBO’s groundbreaking limited series The third day starring jewish law Y Naomie harris, and is also working on Netflix Matilda starring in the movie Emma thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Meanwhile, HBO is preparing to begin production of Martin’s game of Thrones prequel Dragon Houseand the author’s story In the lost lands is being adapted for the big screen by Paul WS Anderson, with Jovovich mile Y Dave Bautista ready to star.
As for Verbinski, he has long balanced the gender tariff (The ring, A cure for wellness) with family rate (Mouse hunter, Rank) and big budget rates (pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger), so he has done so throughout his 25-year career in feature films. He recently produced the indie western The lost son starring Sam worthington, Thomas jane, Heather graham Y Machine Gun Kelly.
