Endgame’s Captain America ending makes the same mistake as HIMYM’s ending

Ted returns to Robin in the ending of How I Met Your Mother and Avengers: Endgame made a similar mistake with the Captain America arc with Peggy Carter.

The end of Captain America in Avengers Endgame makes the same mistake as him How i met your mother end of the series. After a successful time travel heist, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie saw Captain America return to the past to be with Peggy Carter, one of the founders of SHIELD and the love of life of Steve Rogers. While Captain America had a happy ending after several years of confusion, his return to Peggy was not a reflection of his journey in the years since the end of Captain America the First Avenger and was more in line with Ted Mosby’s return to Robin Scherbatsky in the season 9 finale of How i met your mother.

After nine seasons of stories and mysteries, Ted finally meets the elusive “mother”, whose real name, Tracy McConnell, was not revealed until How i met your mother finale – after Barney Stinson and Robin’s wedding. However, after several years of marriage and two children together, Tracy dies of an unknown illness. Six years after Tracy’s death, Ted seeks permission from his teenage sons to pursue Robin, with whom he had been madly in love years before. He was disingenuous about Ted and Robin’s stories, especially after they both broke up to be with other people. Arguably, Robin and Barney never had a real chance at happiness. Most of his post-marriage life was completely overlooked and rushed because the series set its sights on Ted getting back with Robin, denying the two hard-earned lessons. It was an ending that was originally conceived for How i met your mother, but one that no longer made sense considering everything Ted and Robin had been through over the course of nine seasons.

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in Avengers: Endgame

Similarly, Captain America’s return to Peggy at the end of Endgame It made perfect sense for the character if this had been the Phase One iteration still pining for his love interest and regretting the life he never had. However, Steve didn’t bother trying a new life after waking up from his frozen state. Cap spent it all Endgame trying to restore the world’s population and, shortly after taking back Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, Steve left them behind for a life that no longer belonged to him.

Yes, it was sweet at the time, but Captain America’s return to the past in Avengers Endgame it undermined his hard-earned character development throughout the first three phases of the MCU. With his friends back in the game, Steve could have continued to build a life for himself instead of returning to the life he used to know and a relationship that was not guaranteed to work. Ultimately, Steve’s arc is a lot like How i met your mother Ted, filled with an unwillingness to look forward and continue in a meaningful and respectful way with his individual journeys.
