The filmmaker of ‘Rango’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ returns to the field of animation.
Fans of Rank cheer up – filmmaker Gore verbinski is currently in development on not one, but two new animated features, and has a familiar (and brilliant) collaborator in tow. the The ring The director made the leap into blockbuster cinematography with the smash hit of 2003. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and after the complicated and exhausting process of filming the next two Pirates back-to-back sequels (also with great success), Verbinski took a left turn and decided to make an animated film as his follow-up film. The result was a new Oscar-winning classic.
From 2011 Rank uses western tropes to great effect to tell the story of a pet chameleon who is mistaken for a badass hobo and tasked with being the sheriff of a city in desperate need of help. The film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and brought an astonishing cinematic visual palette to life with the help of the legendary Oscar-winning cinematographer. Roger deakins.
So when Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke to Verbinski recently for an exclusive interview related to RankOn the 10th anniversary, he was thrilled to learn that the director is planning his return to the world of animation.
“I’m working on two animated films that I can’t really talk about,” revealed Verbinski. “I am working on two scripts… they are both animated films. They are not Westerners. One is a musical. ”
Verbinski cautioned, however, that it is still the early days of projects. “So many years have passed. They take so long that I just … I mean, it’s too early to talk about them. ”
The filmmaker didn’t have much more detail than that, but he did reveal that Deakins will be involved in these new animated films. “It was like my first call on these two animated movies that I’m doing now,” Verbinski said. “I was like, ‘Roger, are you in?’ So one of them I have presented in detail, so he will come back and help us … really in the production of shots. He is busy. He is very busy “.
Deakins, one of the greatest cinematographers to ever live, is undoubtedly known for his live action work on films ranging from Fargo to The murder of Jesse James to Blade Runner 2049, but has participated in consulting animated films such as WALL-E, rise of the Guardians, and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Quite simply, however, the prospect of him teaming up with Verbinski again, in a musical especially – it’s delicious.
