George RR Martin’s Sandkings film in the works of Gore Verbinski


George RR Martin’s novel Sandkings is being adapted into a Netflix movie by Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy filmmaker Gore Verbinski.

Another George RR Martin story heads to the screen.

In an interview with Collider, director Gore Verbinski revealed that he is developing a film adaptation of Martin’s novel Sandkings, calling it a “brilliant and twisted short story that I love.” Verbinski also confirmed that he is working on the project with writer Dennis Kelly, whose credits include the HBO limited series. The third day and the original British version of the TV show Utopia.

First published by Omni Magazine in August 1979, Sandkings revolves around Simon Kress, a cruel playboy from the planet Baldur who enjoys collecting dangerous pets. When his land piranhas are consumed during one of his business trips, Simon sets out to replace them. While visiting the new store in town, Simon comes across a strange new creature known as sandking, an insect-like animal that is extremely intelligent and even organizes wars with each other based on their different colors and “religions” – the shape in that they adore their owners. . However, over time, Simon realizes how dangerous his new pet really is.

Martin is best known for writing the fantasy novel series. A song of ice and fire, which HBO adapted to the mega-popular television drama game of Thrones. HBO is currently working on Dragon House, a prequel show by game of Thrones that Martin is the executive producer. The series will focus on the history of House Targaryen and will take place 300 before the events of A song of ice and fire, based on Martin’s 2018 novel Fire and blood.

Sandkings was previously adapted by DC Comics as part of a graphic novel series in 1987, before being made into a television movie that served as the first episode of The outer limits revival of the series in the 1990s. Collider reports that John Baldecchi is producing Verbinski’s film adaptation of the story for Netflix, having previously collaborated with the director on his 2001 crime / comedy The Mexican.

Assuming the project progresses, Netflix Sandkings would be Verbinski’s first directing efforts since his 2016 horror film A cure for wellness. He is also known for directing the first three pirates of the Caribbean movies, plus the 2002 U.S. remake of The ring, the animated western comedy Rank and Disney’s infamous big-budget adaptation of The Lone Ranger.
