How to enable Vulkan in Valheim (and what it is for)


Patch 0.146.8 for Valheim introduced support for Vulkan. Some gamers may find that enabling Vulkan fixes GPU glitches and increases their frame rate.

While Valheim is in Early Access, players can expect a lot of updates and patches from Swedish developer Iron Gate Studio, with the latest one including a boost for both bosses and player cadres. Update 0.146.8 for Valheim was just released and while the main feature of the patch was the increased difficulty for the boss fights of Bonemass, Moder, and Yagluth, players were also excited about the other major feature, Vulkan support. Vulkan is an application programming interface (API) like DirectX and OpenGL, and its main attraction is its ability to deliver higher performance by classifying tasks between CPU and GPU. At this time, there is no specific setting that players can change to obtain Valheim to run on Vulkan. Although there is full support for using the API with patch 0.146.8, players will need to do a bit of work to enable and get it up and running. There is also no guarantee that Vulkan will fix gamers’ GPU and FPS issues, and some fans have even reported that it made the issue worse. Still, if gamers are interested in whether the API can improve performance, here’s how to enable Vulkan in Valheim.

How to use Vulkan with Valheim

Vulkan is usually automatically found on updated AMD and NVIDIA drivers, so players shouldn’t have to download the API separately to use it with Valheim. However, there is currently no way to change the settings in the game to force it to launch with Vulkan. Instead, players will need to change their launch settings on Steam. The process is quite simple and is completely reversible, and will only apply to Valheim.

To enable the Vulkan API in Valheim, players should do the following:

  • Open Steam and navigate to library.
  • The right button of the mouse Valheim and select Properties.
  • At general tab, search Launch options. In the text box, type -volcano-force
  • Close the Properties window and launch Valheim.

Players should be able to play normally. If they experience problems, they should open Properties again and delete the text in Launch options, then try starting the game again and make sure there are no more problems.
