Oscar winner and Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o has teamed up with tech startup Kukua to launch an African superhero series for kids, Super Sema.
Lupita Nyong’o has a new superhero project in the works.
As reported by Term, the Oscar winner and Black Panther Star is partnering with tech startup Kukua to launch a series of African superheroes for kids, Super Sema. Nyong’o, who is a shareholder in startup Kukua (which was founded in 2015 by CEO Lucrezia Bisignani), will voice a character from the animated series, as well as serve as executive producer.
Super Sema follows Sema (voiced by Stycie Waweru), a young African woman who uses her science-based superpowers to protect her home, the “futuristic neo-African community of Dunia,” from a dangerous robotic villain. The animated series was written by Claudia Lloyd (Charlie and lola, Mr bean, Tinga Tinga Tales) and directed by Lynne Southerland (Mulan II, Cinderella and the secret prince), the first African-American woman to direct a Disney project.

“I share Kukua’s goal of empowering children through inspiring stories that feature characters in which children are reflected. Kukua COO Vanessa Ford commented on the dearth of black leads on television, noting that “74% of characters on television are still white and only a few represent black leads on television. [STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)]. When I was a black girl growing up in North America majoring in science, I didn’t see anyone who looked like me when I watched cartoons or walked into a chemistry class. “
Following her Oscar-winning performance in 2013 12 years of slavery, Nyong’o played supporting CGI characters in both The jungle book and Disney Star Wars Sequel trilogy. She also played a supporting role in 2016 Queen of Katwe, a drama inspired by a true story about a young Ugandan woman who discovers that she has a talent for playing chess. Most recently, Nyong’o earned critical acclaim for her dual role in Jordan Peele’s horror / thriller film. We, in addition to portraying Nakia in Black Panther. Released as a YouTube Originals program for kids and families, Super Sema It will debut its first eight episodes on March 8 (International Women’s Day), and the remaining twelve episodes will be released in the following weeks.
