The bonus episodes of The Walking Dead season 10 finally bring Maggie back, and she’s already positioned to become Alexandria’s new leader.
The Walking Dead Season 10 has brought Maggie back and is already positioning her to become Alexandria’s new leader. Instead of going ahead with your plans to The Walking Dead Season 11, the series opted to film an additional six episodes that extend into season 10. These episodes are smaller in scale and focus on only a few characters each. The first bonus episode, “Home Sweet Home,” sees Maggie return with her son, Hershel, and a new group of survivors in hopes of calling Alexandria home.
Since Rick’s “death” in The Walking Dead Season 9, Alexandria has been overseen by a council rather than a leader. Several Alexandria residents have served on the council, with Gabriel as a senior member and, prior to his departure, Michonne as head of security with full veto power. The council has decided several issues since its inception, such as Negan’s fate after killing Margo and whether or not Lydia could stay. However, during the War of the Whisperers, the council lost more members, and in the chaos that followed, the current state of the ruling body has not really been discussed. Now, with Maggie’s return, Alexandria may once again find herself ruled by a single person.

In The Walking Dead Season 10, Episode 17, “Home Sweet Home”, Maggie’s return finds her taking command almost immediately. Daryl, in particular, follows one step behind Maggie, following her lead as they go and pick up the remaining members of their group. When it comes to deciding where to spend the night, it’s up to Maggie, and when they meet Reaper, it’s Maggie who makes the decisions. Kelly also picks up on Maggie’s obvious leader vibe and says, “It seems like he’s been in charge of people his whole life. You protect them.Along with this omen, the final scene of the episode even hints at Maggie assuming leadership in the form of an Easter egg. When Maggie and the rest finally arrive in Alexandria, there is visible graffiti on Maggie’s left shoulder as she enters the city: Whispers in screams. A remnant of the final attack of the Whisperers in Alexandria, the phrase is also the title of The Walking Dead Volume 23, the trade paperback that includes the comic issues in which Maggie is officially the new leader of Hilltop.
All combined, the clear nod to Maggie’s rise as a leader in the comics and how other characters are already reacting to her return seems to portend her future lies in becoming Alexandria’s next leader. Although the community has technically been run by the council, it was Michonne that Alexandria sought leadership after Rick’s disappearance. Following his departure, Daryl takes on part of this role, but his character has never been someone to take over, usually working best in partnership with another, like Carol or Rick. Alexandria needs someone to lead her again, and The Walking Dead he’s grooming Maggie to take on this role.
Also, a leader for Alexandria will become very important in the future. The Walking Dead season 11. Though delayed, the show’s final season is expected to adapt Commonwealth’s story from the comics. This story introduces not only a massive new community, but also the woman who runs it, Pamela Milton. In the comics, Pamela is another setback for Rick and is the main antagonist of this arc. Assuming the AMC adaptation sticks a bit to the source material, your Commonwealth leader will need a counterpart in Alexandria. And although Gabriel has received a strong development in recent seasons, he is not on par with a villain like Governor Milton.
Maggie, on the other hand, is a much stronger option to oppose the Commonwealth leader. Not only does she have the experience, but she is a strong-willed person who is not easily swayed by skilled politicians, as Pamela definitely is. There are still five extra episodes to complete. The Walking Dead season 10, but Maggie is already setting herself up as the leader who will see Alexandria through her next conflict with the Commonwealth and into the future that awaits the community.
