Thor: Love & Thunder is rebuilding Asgard, which risks undermining the lessons learned from its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok & Avengers: Endgame.
Thor: love and thunder is rebuilding Asgard, but it will be difficult to get it back without undermining the lessons learned from its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok Y Avengers Endgame. Director Taika Waititi is currently in the middle of producing his next MCU movie. After being significantly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, production has been going smoothly for a few months, with various ensemble images making their way online, offering insight into what to expect from the sequel. Among the latest images it is revealed that the movie will see the return of old Asgard.
Later images reveal that it will be part of another theatrical scene similar to the dramatization of Loki’s fake death in Thor: The Dark World; only this time, it will be the disappearance of Odin. This confirms that whatever else is happening in this backdrop will be set after the true Asgard was destroyed at the end of Ragnarok. Since the remaining Asgardians have moved to Earth following the destruction of their home world, there is also the possibility that they are trying to mimic the look of their old kingdom in their new settlement.

While this may seem like a great idea to help them feel more at home, it undermines the idea that Asgard is not a place, it is a town, which was a strong theme in both. Ragnarok Y Endgame. In Ragnarok, Thor was motivated to save Asgard from being destroyed after having visions that Surtur will initiate the events of Ragnarok. It was only later, during his spiritual conversation with Odin at his lowest point while fighting Hela, that he realized that he was focused on saving the wrong Asgard. Instead of having an attachment to the actual location, he needed to take care of his people. This ultimately gave him the idea to intentionally initiate Ragnarok in order to defeat the Goddess of Death and ensure the safety of her citizens, as wherever they go next, they will be Asgard, as long as the Asgardians remain.
The idea is emphasized, albeit more subtly, in Endgame. In the brief time that Joe and Anthony Russo’s movie was in New Asgard, it was revealed that Asgardians were settling for what they had. While his so-called king was not working, as he tried to remove himself from responsibility after his catastrophic mistake in Avengers: Infinity WarThey seemed fine, partly thanks to Valkyrie for taking charge of the situation. While it looked like a simple fishing village, the fact that they seemed to thrive highlighted the fact that it was still Asgard, because that’s where Thor’s people were; They don’t have to rebuild it with grand stages and palatial buildings to make it feel like home.
Interestingly, while Thor: Ragnarok spent his time destroying characteristic elements of the God of Thunder sub-franchise in an effort to send a message that it was a new beginning, Thor: love and thunder seems to be bringing it back. In addition to restoring ancient Asgard, Mjölnir is also back on set. While it appeared in Avengers Endgame, Captain America finally returned it to its original time settings at the end of the same movie. It’s unclear how the magic hammer influences the story, but like rebuilding Asgard, it undermines the lessons Thor has learned after Hela crushed it with her bare hands.
