Mortal Kombat’s famous character Sub-Zero will be more complex than a typical villain in the upcoming film adaptation, says actor Joe Taslim.
The next Mortal Kombat The film adaptation focuses on Sub-Zero as its main antagonist, but the character is complex. First introduced in 1992 Mortal Kombat An arcade game, Sub-Zero was a character unlike any other seen in fighting games up to that point, and he remains a fan favorite of many today.
The character’s ability to freeze his opponents before mercilessly hammering them with combos was second only to his brutal finishing move, in which he deftly removed an opponent’s head and spinal cord. Today, almost thirty years after the first Mortal Kombat launch of the game, Sub-Zero has the distinctive honor of being the only character in the franchise to have appeared in all Mortal Kombat game. The character has definitely evolved from who he was in the franchise’s early days, and now that a new film adaptation from producer James Wan is on the way, Sub-Zero will take his place as the film’s main antagonist. This is great news for fans, but one issue that might concern some is how the famous character will be handled in the movie. After all, if the last two movies are any indication, attention to detail regarding Sub-Zero wasn’t exactly a priority.

During a recent visit to the set of Mortal Kombat for Collider, Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim insisted that he plays Lin Kuei’s killer with “a layer of consciousnessAnd allow the character to maintain a certain level of introspection. It’s not just about being the most evil villain possible, apparently, and Taslim seems to have gone to great lengths to try and balance the good and bad aspects of Sub-Zero’s complicated personality.
The decision to find a balance in Sub-Zero’s character should fill fans with a healthy dose of confidence. Arguably one of the biggest failures of video games in film adaptations is the failure to inject more depth into familiar characters. Of course, this can be a difficult task to perform. Too much change in character than fans already know can ruin an entire movie, while not developing the character beyond his in-game incarnation can be just as damaging. In this particular case, striking the perfect balance is a huge challenge, although if done correctly, the character and the film can propel the franchise in new directions. Hopefully, Sub-Zero’s level of “awareness” ends up being enough to keep fans engaged.
So far the Mortal Kombat the movie looks so much better than what has come before in the franchise. Everything that has come to date in the form of images, clips, and of course the trailer has been promising and hints at the idea that this time, Mortal Kombat Justice has been done in a film adaptation. Then again, the movie has yet to be released and until it does, no one will really know if it lives up to the game’s franchise or not. Hopefully this is the adaptation that changes things for Mortal Kombatas there is certainly no shortage of stories to explore in the subsequent sequels.
