ZeniMax Media’s board of directors was dissolved following Microsoft’s acquisition of the company. This added eight game studios to Xbox.
Next Bethesdaacquisition by Xbox, the board of directors of ZeniMax Media has been dissolved. It was expected that Microsoft now has full creative and financial control of the ZeniMax properties. Zenimax’s $ 7.5 billion purchase of Xbox is the second largest in video game history and adds eight game development companies to Xbox Game Studios. Bethesda had announced during the roundtable with Xbox that two new games are in development at two of its newer studios acquired prior to the purchase.
ZeniMax’s board of directors was comprised of executives and celebrities from many different facets of the entertainment industry. Members included pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, former ZeniMax president Ernest Del, former MGM CEO Harry Sloan, former CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, former MLB “iron man” Cal Ripken Jr., and private equity executive Michael Dominguez . Former President Trump’s brother, Robert Trump, served on the board before his passing in 2020.
GamespotThe report said Pete Hines, Bethesda’s senior vice president of global marketing and communications, told the publication of the dissolution of the board via email. Since joining ZeniMax, various board members have been engaged in other projects. For example, Bruckheimer now sits on the board of directors of mobile gaming company Skillz. Ripken Jr. has joined the Draft Kings board of directors as a special advisor and Domínguez is president and CEO of ALHI.
As part of the board of directors, executives advised the company not to accept deals related to movies or television and Bethesda’s gaming properties. Hines said that under his guidance, the company rejected multiple offers using the Ancient scrolls Y Fall out properties for creating movies or shows. Hines had cited that the company rejected previous deals due to fear of a misdescription of the properties by people unfamiliar with its franchises. However, this stance appeared to change based on the recent announcement of a Fall out Amazon Studios television show.
Bethesda choosing to forgo television and movies is not the wrong decision. Video game movies are good at best and insufferable at worst, as demonstrated by the past year. Sonic the Hedgehog Y Monster hunter, respectively. It’s hard to argue with a board of entertainment executives when Ron Perlman runs around with wet blonde anime hair using a Shift Ax the wrong way. If anything, fans have them to thank for Milla Jovovich not yelling at any CGI dragon in an army tank. Still, the decision to dissolve the ZeniMax board, while expected, should have some interesting repercussions for the future of Bethesda.
