Few Naruto characters were immune to the darkness that lurked beyond the surface of the brightest world.
It’s hard to believe that a show about kids training as ninjas has many dark moments, but Naruto and his companions are preparing to face a multitude of dangers in their daily lives. Konoha is under constant threat from other villages and the pain caused by past wars seems to carry the pain of war to the next generations.
The show was able to balance its darker themes with its lighthearted humor, but there were still moments that seemed too dark compared to the overall story. Few characters were immune to the darkness that lurked beyond the surface of the brighter world.
10 Kakashi kills his friend
During a conversation with Sasuke, Kakashi reveals that he has suffered many losses in life. One of the biggest losses for Kakashi had to be the loss of his friend, Rin.
Rin forcibly became a Jinchuriki. The plan was for Rin to destroy Konoha as soon as he returned to his village. Rin decided to end her life to prevent destruction from happening. Rin threw herself in front of Kakashi’s Chidori. Kakashi could only watch in horror as he took the life of the girl he loved.
9 Danzo steals Shisui’s eyes
Danzo was known to be incredibly power hungry. No matter what Danzo did, no one made any move to stop him. He is one of the main leaders of the village and plays a key role in the downfall of the Uchiha Clan.
Shisui was one of the few people capable of stopping the blow and his peace plan could have worked if Danzo had not interfered. Danzo stole one of Shisui’s eyes and wanted Shisui’s power for himself, as he did not believe that Shisui could stop the Uchiha.
8 Sasuke’s death in the land of waves
Team 7 had been assigned several small missions after graduation. They were then assigned to help escort a bridge builder back to his homeland in the Land of Waves. The mission would end up being much more difficult than they expected.
Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi found themselves facing almost constant threats. While protecting the bridge builder, Sasuke appears to have died from an attack by Haku. Haku only made it look like he had killed Sasuke, but that didn’t make Sakura’s tears any less heartbreaking.
7 The second stage of the Chunin exams nearly killed the participants
With Kakashi’s recommendation, Team 7 is encouraged to participate in the Chunin Exams. It may have started out as an ordinary test, but the test quickly turned deadly.
When the young ninja enters a place called Forest of Death, Sasuke is attacked by Orochimaru, changing his life forever. Naruto and Sasuke are unconscious while Sakura tries to defend them. Many children’s lives were risked and none of the adults intervened.
6 The shock of Jiraiya’s death
Jiraiya had learned the origin of the Akatsuki leader. Although Tsunade had offered to help her out, she reminded her that the village needed her. He ended up having to deal with Pain alone.
He had no way of knowing that he was about to be killed by his former student. The pain would kill Jiraiya using the same things his old master had taught him. The shock of Jiraiya’s death was felt not only by people like Naruto and Tsunade, but also by everyone who watched those episodes. After all, Naruto lost someone who was like family to him.
5 Neji nearly beat his cousin to death
Neji and Hinata Hyuga clashed to fight. Despite being outmatched, Hinata refuses to back down, but Neji didn’t show any compassion towards his cousin; hit her with everything he had.
The battle ended with Hinata on the ground and Neji had to be pinned down. Hinata had to be carried on a wheel, as she was at death’s door. Neji’s callous disregard for his life stems from his own haunting past, his cruelty was inspired by the cruelty he had faced in life.
4 Itachi torturing his brother
Itachi was put in a difficult place when he had to slaughter his entire clan. He fought hard while taking the lives of those closest to him. The only person he was allowed to do without was his beloved younger brother.
But Sasuke was not completely affected. Itachi used his sharingan to torture his brother for hours. In the end, Sasuke was left with nothing but intense hatred for his brother.
3 Naruto endured a horrible childhood
Naruto lost both of his parents the day he was born. He grew up in a town that hated him while having no idea why he disliked them so much. He was ignored and lonely for most of his childhood and no one in the entire town seemed to care about him.
Naruto’s parents had sacrificed their lives to protect the village and the Fourth Hokage sealed Kurama as his son for the good of the village. Since Naruto’s ancestry was kept a closely guarded secret, the village treated him terribly.

After Sasuke helped the villages defeat Kaguya, he was still lost. Sasuke had a plan to change the world completely. To achieve his goal, he would have to destroy the current world system and order.
Naruto steps forward to fight his best friend, ready to give his life to stop Sasuke. Naruto is the only one who can save the world, but he is still unwilling to end the life of the first person he connected with.
1 Kaguya almost drained the world of the chakras
Kaguya was one of the biggest threats Naruto The universe had to face off. Kaguya could represent a genjutsu that caught the entire world. If they hadn’t stopped it, the world’s population could have remained trapped.
The world would have been drained of its chakra and made mindless slaves. Kaguya’s goal was to take control of everyone else’s chakra. If Kaguya had been successful, she would have been completely unstoppable.
