The first casualty comes when Layton and Ruth learn that Mel is still alive and has the data they need to find out which parts of the world are hot spots for possible repopulation. Wilford has spat on this climate model time and time again, but they know that once they bring Mel on board and she makes the PSA, they will have the train, including Big Alice, sway beside her again.
However, they need to take over both engine rooms now that Wilford controls them. He has brought Javi to Big Alice, with Ben in Snowpiercer, all under surveillance. Fortunately, after escaping the compost room, Layton and Ruth are able to use Alex’s information and sneak into Javi’s rooms. They kill the guards and send a message to Ben about this new hit. This leads Ben to brutally fight his own guards and change tracks, as he is the front end.
But Wilford knows the bumps and the feel of the road, and he is able to discern what is happening. He grabs Alex and bursts into Javi’s control room, realizing that they are trying to slow down to pick up Mel on his new course. His soldiers beat Javi senselessly with their truncheons, but when Javi indicates, spitting blood, that Wilford needs the engineer, the chief shows that he can do whatever he pleases. Wilford unleashes his dog on Javi in a sadistic attack, killing the man she trained with Mel and speeding them up to fly past her, which ties in with scenes from earlier this season. Explain why Mel missed the train and Alex stayed in the back window screaming for his mom.
Still, Wilford can’t stop Layton, an escaped Alex and new resistance from hitting the front end of Snowpiercer. They then use an old clue to return in hopes of finding Mel at the weather station after the initial rescue was thwarted. Unfortunately, the only heater they found in the establishment was used to keep the data drives warm. Mel is nowhere to be found and when Alex finds his diary, it is revealed that he died.
Mel left notes for her daughter to follow Layton, describing how without energy or food, she went to the white snow to die. However, she believes that Alex may be a better version of her and urges the girl to help bring Wilford down for good and rebuild society.
