Warner Bros. Pictures is officially filing two DCEU movies: Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and James Wan’s Aquaman spin-off, The Trench.

Ava duvernay New gods as well as James Wan Aquaman cleave The ditch they are officially discarded by Warner Bros. For years, the DCEU has had several franchises in operation and has also put other projects in development. Some have been trapped in developmental hell, while others eventually move on as produced or scrapped. But in some cases, there have been DC titles that have had brief updates from time to time, suggesting that Warner Bros. is still actively working on them in one way or another.

While the DCEU has made progress in recent years, there have been a few movies where fans have been waiting for updates for quite some time. One of them is Ava DuVernay New gods which would focus on Fourth World characters like Darkseid, Big Barda, Mister Miracle, and more. It was announced that DC Comics writer Tom King will write the script with DuVernay, as he has written critically acclaimed books such as Mr miracle, making it a good resource. But after years of developing these films for the studio, Warner Bros. officially confirmed that New gods and The ditch they are no longer happening as they have been discarded. This comes right after DuVernay answered the Twitter about fans who wanted to see Ray Porter’s Darkseid in it New gods movie. While he appreciated Porter’s tweet to fans about not bothering the director to put his Darkseid in the film, DuVernay said that WB would tackle the project soon. In a joint statement from Warner Bros. and DC, they shared the following via The Hollywood Reporter:

“As part of our DC roster, some legacy development titles, including New Gods and The Trench, will not advance. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan, and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process. We look forward to it. that we continue to collaborate with them on other DC stories. Projects will remain in their able hands as they move forward in the future. “

While this is the nature of the Hollywood film industry, it is certainly disappointing for both of us. New gods and The ditch that is no longer happening. In the case of the DuVernay project, it would have allowed a wide variety of Jack Kirby’s beloved characters to make their way to the big screen. With King having co-written the script with her, it would have been intriguing to see her involvement with the characters she had written for in the comics. Time Zack Snyder’s Justice League will not have any sequels, if Porter had reprized the role of Darkseid in New gods, would have allowed the iconic villain to be further explored.

Interestingly, the cancellation of The ditch it makes some sense to a certain extent because Wan will soon take care of shooting Aquaman 2. While it was an unusual choice for a spinoff movie from Jason Momoa’s DC franchise, it would have been fascinating to see the DCEU tackle horror, which is something they haven’t done. It’s worth noting that DC and Warner Bros. claim that if those projects were ever revived, DuVernay and Wan would still get involved. Maybe New gods I The ditch It could be updated on the HBO Max properties, as WB is also looking to bring original DC movies to the streaming service.
