Perhaps the most shocking result of the Arrowverse Crisis in Infinite Earths it was the creation of a new universe that combined elements from different multiverse worlds into an Earth-Prime universe. When J’onn Jones and the others temporarily open a portal to the Zone, Brainy realizes his mistake. Their existing knowledge of the Area is basically null and void. This Phantom Zone is no longer the one-dimensional intergalactic prison they were hoping for. Instead of, Crisis has combined all the Phantom Zones that previously existed, creating a mini multiverse within an extra-dimensional space. His plan for Dreamer to quickly locate Supergirl is now nearly impossible to execute, meaning Supergirl will be at the mercy of the Phantoms’ torture for much longer.

In both film and television, Supergirl and her family have strong ties to the Phantom Zone. In fact, Supergirl has been sent or trapped in the Phantom Zone four times. The first time was in the 1984 film that bears his name, where he teamed up with a former teacher to escape. The second was during Smallville, which also marked the television presentation of the Wraith Ghosts that existed to haunt the prisoners of the Zone. When Smallville’s Supergirl escaped, one of the Wraiths also broke loose on the world. In the Arrowverse iteration, Supergirl has visited the Phantom Zone twice, and in their attempt to free her, Supergirl’s friends have repeated history and allowed a Phantom to escape and terrorize Earth. Also, in that version, Kara’s father, Zor-El, created the Phantom Zone, and her mother Alura, as a judge, sentenced dangerous prisoners to be exiled to the Zone or its adjacent Fort Rozz maximum security facility.

Supergirl herself is equally, literally and figuratively, in the dark about the serious dangers of this new Phantom Zone. Since this Zone was created by CrisisHow can she know for sure which version of Zor-El rescued her? Is this the father he left on Krypton? Supergirl also cannot make out how much time she spends in the outside world while in the Phantom Zone, as she has already been trapped inside at least one nightmare created by Ghosts. The longer she stays in the Phantom Zone, the greater the risk that Kara will lose both her sanity and her life.

Crisis impact on the Phantom Zone shown in the season premiere of Supergirl transforms an already formidable terror into absolute hell for Supergirl. She is the model of hope, but hope is the only thing that Zor-El tells her she will have to give up in order to avoid the worst horrors in the Zone. Ghosts will inflict harsher punishments, bring more fears to life, the more you resist. While Kara is likely holding onto hope more fiercely than ever, this is not the Phantom Zone she used to know, and she may have to become someone else to survive.
