When King in Black comes to an epic finale, Silver Surfer is one of Marvel’s heroes who undergoes a notable change in his status quo.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for King in Black # 5, by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, Jason Keith, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.
As the final battle for the fate of the Marvel Universe unfolded King in black, a fan-favorite hero returned from the far reaches of the cosmos for a rematch against Knull, the dark god of symbiotes – Silver Surfer. After first facing Knull at the dawn of time, Norrin Radd takes on the symbiote villain once again just as the Marvel Universe crowns a new God of Light to counter the King in Black of the same name.
And as the surfer faces Knull head-on in King in black # 5, a visible change restores Norrin to her classic potential, with the signature silver glow that shines on the Surfer after wearing a dark shade for some time.

The 2019 Donny Cates and Tradd Moore miniseries Silver Surfer: Black picked up from Cates’ opening Guardians of the Galaxy run, which transported the Surfer through a singularity. Stranded in an unknown timeline with Knull awake and ready to plunge the universe into darkness, the Surfer discovered that while expending Cosmic Power to keep shadows at bay, his metallic cloak began to appear blackened from consumption. Norrin was able to triumph over Knull in his initial skirmish and unleash the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe, and the effort gave him a completely black metallic hue.
The Silver Surfer’s arrival on Earth to fight Knull in the present for a long-awaited rematch coincided with the arrival of the Enigma Force to baptize a prophesied God of Light capable of defeating Knull for good. The Enigma Force was introduced as an ancient energy that served as a natural counterpoint to Knull and his deadly weapon, All-Black the Necrosword. The Enigma Force would continue to fuel the Uni-Power, the omnipotent energy that powers cosmic superhero Captain Universe, with the Enigma Force selecting Eddie Brock as the ultimate Uni-Power host.
When the Silver Surfer broke the symbiote surrounding the Earth, severing it from the outer support while Knull scoured the planet in search of Dylan Brock, he freed the Enigma Force from being restrained by the symbiotes. Before Enigma Force teamed up with Eddie, he doused the Surfer with his light on the road to imbue a new Captain Universe. In the process, Silver Surfer’s signature glow has been fully restored, just in time for Knull to form a sword out of the silver and face the dark god head-on. Cates later confirmed that it was the exposure to the Enigma Force that restored the Surfer, and not the ultimate defeat of Knull.
King in black has shaken the status quo for several heroes in the Marvel Universe, most notably the impressive rise of Eddie Brock. The changes to the Silver Surfer appear to be more cosmetic so far, but the restoration of his silver glow could indicate that Norrin has returned to his full cosmic potential, with his mastery of Cosmic Power potentially as firm as ever. With Knull defeated and the Silver Surfer feeling and looking like before, Captain Universe has a silver ally in tow to save the day.
