Spoilers for Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex # 3 go ahead!

On Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex # 3, it is revealed that Lex luthor wears a mask that looks like his own face, very similar to jester during Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s classic story arc “Death of the Family” critically acclaimed New 52 bat Man to run. However, the two villains chose to cover their faces for very different reasons.

One of DC’s most unique books Future state event, Superman vs. Imperious Lex chronicles Lex Luthor’s adventures on the distant planet Lexor, where he rules as a “benevolent” overlord, actually preying on a gullible population who believe Luthor is a god, thanks to his advanced technology. Throughout the miniseries, readers can see that Luthor wears a mask that resembles his own face. Readers are left guessing why, but in issue three, written by Mark Russell with art by Steve Pugh and colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr., they learn that it is due to Luthor’s vanity; an assistant gives Luthor a new face, telling him that it makes him look “younger” than ever.

While vanity and ego are the driving forces behind Luthor’s decision to wear a mask, the Joker had very different and more sinister reasons for donning it. In the story of “Death in the family”, which was published in Batman 13-17, the Joker wore a mask of his own face, but while Luthor’s mask was synthetic, the Joker was true – made from her own skin that had the doll maker slash her face a year earlier. While the comics treated it as a symbol of rebirth, it took on an even deeper meaning in the context of the story: The Joker’s true identity has never been revealed, despite teasing along the way. The lack of a definite origin of the character is one of the sources of the character’s power: it gives him a sense of mystery and danger that he uses in his plans; in essence, it is a mask behind which he hides. The use of the Joker masks is to generate terror and dread in the citizens of Gotham, while that of Luthor is pure vanity. He speaks of both approaches: the Joker is simply insane and Luthor is ego-motivated.

Lex luthor wears a mask that resembles his own face in Future state and while it shares some similarities with the Joker’s wearing masks, they are motivated by very different reasons. Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex # 3 It is now available in stores and in digital format.
